help an out of towner, in DC for wedding, we will have thursday night free where to eat?

Hi all, NY chowhound here. So my wife and I will be in town for a few nights with 1 night to ourselves. We are staying in the Dupont Circle area and want to go out for a great dinner. We want the best place for our 1 night, price does not matter. That said if you are familiar with them our style generally leans toward Blue hill over Daniel, Kuma inn or Momofuku over Mandarin Oriental. We are mid 30s not at all stuffy or too cool for school just want a great meal in your city. We eat all types of quisine...southern,sushi,classic steakhouse...etc we are open to anything. I guess we prefer to be in the Dupont Circle area but if it is an easy train or cab(we have no car) we are open to other areas as well. Thanks all

    Evme --

I always like to recommend to visitors not just what I like, but what they may not have available where they are from. For a NY-er, in DC avoid: Chinese, Italian, most sushi (there is one exception I note below), pizza. It's not that what we have here in DC is bad -- just that you can experience as good or better at home.

Komi is probably the best dining destination by reputation in DC now. If you can get a reservation, you should do it. Ditto Minibar -- but its notoriously difficult and harder probably after the 60 Minutes piece.

In addition to this thread, here's another recent discussion on chowhound of high-end DC spots: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/7020...

If somehow you can make it to the VA suburbs, try to get either to Rays the Steaks or Hellburger, or to one of our many great Vietnamese spots.

That said, in DC proper, my favorites:

    - Rasika for outstanding and innovative Indian food
    - Courduroy, wonderful soups, famous for his scallops, meat and seafood all great
    - Vidalia for southern accented, modern American cooking. if you aren't picky, and Rh (chef) is there, tell the staff to let RJ cook you whatever he wants.

Any of these above destinations should impress.

I have not yet been to Sushi Taro, but a seat at the sushi bar and an authentic kaiseki meal, with fish flown direct from Japan, is supposed to be the best Japanese dining available here right now. And it's very near your location in Dupont Circle.

Well if price doesn't matter and you want Dupont then I would go to Komi. I had my first Komi experience last Friday and it was out of this world. You must make reservations exactly 1 month from the date you want to dine so plan accordingly...and call exactly at noon (preferably on 2 different phones to get through). It's 100% worth the effort.

Komi would be perfect if you can get in. If not, Obelisk is another great place near Dupont - it's upscale Italian and fabulous, and also a hard reservation to get as it is quite small. I second the suggestion of Rasika for a super inventive and modern take on Indian food. It's easy to take the Metro from Dupont to Gallery Place to get there.

Komi is very good, but a hard reservation. Upscale food, but very different.

In the Dupont area, I really like Hank's Oyster Bar. It is casual, but I think the food is well prepared. Nice fresh fish. No dessert menu, but chunks of nice chocolate at the end.

Rasika is further, but very fun and good for Indian.

Sounds like Komi would be a good fit for you. There are lots of threads about Komi, so I recommend you do a search on this board. My only hesitation is that I'm not sure you'll be able to do the Komi tasting menu on a Thursday. (There is a difference between the weekday and weekend options.) The Komi tasting menu is an amazing -- and amazingly delicious -- experience.
