I haven't had breakfast at the Mansion Diner in quite a while but it used to be terrible. Gracie Mews does a good breakfast, not counting the terrible home fries. The OJ is fresh squeezed and they have the best waffles in the neighborhood, light as air. My preference is Peter's Gourmet Diner at 1606 1st Ave @ 83 Street, which unfortunately doesn't open until just before 11am. The eggs are perfect and the home fries are sublime, plus fresh squeezed OJ. All of these places plus a thousand others will do french toast with white bread and most of them call it "traditional" french toast, just ask the waiter.

re: gutsofsteel
I found breakfast to be terrible, but that was in the old days before the makeover. The juice was from a container, the home fries were standard Greek-diner-lousy and they always burned the omelets as does 99% of the diners in NYC. Dinner was another matter. They had some great specials most days of the week and I especially loved the beef stew. All this has changed since the place was tidied up and the dinner food has gone downhill. We still love our favorite waiter at the Mansion but we hardly ever go there anymore. Another thing - the don't know how to make a decent tasting burger.
Try the burger at Peter's, or even better, the patty melt which is made on "the dreaded" toasted challah bread. Someone has finally come up with a good use for this otherwise inedible stuff.
