Maui Beef

Heading to Maui in a couple of weeks and would love to try the Maui beef down there. Any good suggestions for restaurants or butcher? I would love to try it with minimal added flavourings so nothing drenched in marinade.

This was very hard to find. We finally found some at Longs but they were so minuscule hubs decided to pass. He wanted a huge ribeye to sink his teeth in. On the last day, we had a bit of time before checking in at the airport, we went to Whole Foods to kill some time and that's when we found some local maui beef steak. Unfortunately with only 30 minutes before check in, we couldn't try it. Oh well, I guess there's always next time.

Thanks! I do have a kitchen at the condo we're staying. We're in the Kappalua area so a butcher or market in that area will suit us best.

Not sure you're going to find a proper butcher shop anywhere on the island (maybe Takamiya in Happy Valley?). Your best bet may be the Long's Drugs in Lahaina. I'd call first, though.

It's been a few years since I was there, but at the time the primary retail source on the island was - seriously - Long's Drugs. If you're staying on the south side, the store in Azeka Plaza mauka of South Kihei Road has (or had, at least) a dedicated upright cooler on the front aisle.

For a restaurant, you can't do better than Hali'imaile General Store. Although getting the rib eye there means that's one less other thing you can order from the menu. If you've got a kitchen, I'd cook the steak yourself and try something else at the restaurant.
