Mediocre meal at Golden Turtle
I was in Ossington area on business around dinner time Friday and after business concluded, I thought I would treat myself to a meal at this restaurant where I have gone before.
It was a warm night and I didn't feel like having a bellyful of warm broth sloshing around. So I went to the "Chet's Specials" and chose a rice noodle and veggie/tofu mixture.
It arrived, and the first veggie I bit into was lukewarm. Then the next. The noodles underneath were hot enough. And as I worked across to the other end, the vegetables came up to a more cooked temperature.
Flavouring was nothing amazing. No fresh herbs beyond a couple of compulsory sprigs of coriander as side garnish. I could have gone and purchased "Easy Thai Meal At Home, Just Add Boiling Water and Your Own Meat and Vegetables" from my local Sobey's and gotten the same flavour sensations. The noodles from the store pack wouldn't have been as nice, mind.
I know that the specialty of the house is Pho. Then I say, don't offer things you aren't prepared to cook properly and focus on your taste winners. And don't put a dish this mediocre as a "Chef's Special".
Next time I walk south to their competitors.

I wouldn't say it's quite that bad, but I've never found it to live up to the hype. I've had good pho there, decent pork, totally forgettable spring rolls. But I don't think it's much different than, say, Pho Hung, on Spadina.

if i'm not getting pho at golden turtle i usually get the bun with herb wrapped grilled beef, i believe it's #85. i know most on this board prefer the other ossington place (i'm not sure what it's called) but i had some unfriendly service there that's stopped me from going back.
Actually I seen Susur at Pho Tien Thanh not that long ago. The only reason I mention is because it seemed like they give him the special treatment. They had special dishes(plates and bowls) for him. I personally like the food at both of these places. I have experienced the watery brother at Golden Turtle like Charles Yu, but only once that I can remember. They are also very crusty people. Never smiling nor friendly, and are known to kick people out. One server took my wife's dish away from her before she was finished to get us to leave. Actually now that I mention it, I will stick to Pho Tien Thanh, much friendlier.
Pho Tien Thanh down the street is my favourite so far :)
