40th bday dinner/all guys weekend in Toronto, suggested alternatives to steak houses?

About 10 men are gathering in Toronto in mid-June for a big weekend to celebrate friend's belated 40th. Baseball game will be had, and the plan is for a dinner fit for a 40th. The initial idea was steakhouse but, have to say, prices @ Barberians & Jacobs look quite steep.
Have some questions for Toronto Chows that can help focus things, and perhaps identify better values on the food/wine side:

1) Are Barberians and Jacbos the top 2 choices for steak? Was wondering if Tom Jones is an alternative to the two? Not considering House of Chan due to location. Morton's, maybe, but no to Hys or Ruth Chris.
2) Should the Fifth be thrown in as a "meaty" alternative?
3) Person suggested maybe Crush or Brasaii as they have private rooms/spots for 10 people. Of the 2, which is recommended, and are their wine lists better priced than the habitual steak houses?
4) Other suggestions fit for a 40th dinner with 10 guys, with prices slightly below the normal steakhouse fare for TO? I would suggest mains priced between $26 to $35, with good wine list. (All are employed but don't necessarily want to blow a week of pay on dinner).

Look forward to suggestions.

  1. Turf Lounge would work. It has betting on horses too which suits a guy's dinner. Bay & Adelaide.

IF I recall, though, they close early on Saturday.

Do they? I thought they were open till midnight, but I could be wrong.

    2. Nota Bene or Beerbistro? Both serve steak, with lots of options in your price range.

      1. The working hypothesis at Barberians is that nothing but the steak is good. Th ewine list is extensive and expensive.

        1. Hi elliottl,

I've been to Tom Jones, not really a birthday party atmosphere, imo. I really think The Keg is great value, good atmosphere and the wine list is pretty decent. There is one on York and a new one on The Esplanade, both have the new updated modern look and are definitely not like the family Keg's you might find in the suburbs. Some other steak places in the city are Bardi's, and Harbour 60 - Jacobs is likely the most $$$$. The Fifth is a good alternative but I wouldn't say the atmosphere is what you're after at Crush.

          Have fun!

I second the Keg. The food is way better than the branding (their ads make it look like Bellamy's). In my opinion, it's the best steak value I've ever experienced. Magic steaks in the price range you're looking for. I've only been to the Keg Mansion on Jarvis.

          2. Nota Bene crossed my mind too... and they have private space, if that's what you're looking for. Crush and Beerbistro are both good suggestions. Both have a big sort of celebratory feel, but don't try too hard (although I think Crush's rooms are downstairs and might feel too sequestered, depending on what you're looking for).

The Keg is pretty generic and not very special, in my opinion.

Other possible alternatives... something like Rodney's or Rodney's by Bay if your party is into oysters and/or seafood, Buca, although much more casual The Queen and Beaver is an upscale gastro pub with good food and atmosphere.

Funny, when I first read the post, I was thinking Nota Bene, Buca or Rodney's By Bay so I must heartily second Rabbit's suggestions. Are you guys thinking of going out for drinks before or after? If so, you might want to also plant yourself in a neighbourhood with some good nearby watering holes. I haven't been to Boehmer or Union yet but the Ossington strip is definitely hopping and I'm sure there are some meaty options at both spots. The Drake could be fun as well. Sounds like a fun night!

Just to clarify, what did you mean about Beerbis and Crush having "big sort of celebratory feel, but don't try too hard" ... re: don't get too rowdy there? Not sure that will be the case... We will be well behaved :)

                1. re: elliottl

                  Ha!

No I meant that the restaurants don't try to hard... which is actually a compliment in my eyes. They're not scene-y places, where you have to stand in line or where some meathead bouncer is going to try to intimidate you (like Spice Route, etc.), but they're still reasonably stylish, celebratory, and fun. I'm sure your party will be completely decorous (or at least some someone at home with bail money just in case).

I will try to scope the interest in a place like Nota Bene or something like that, other than a steak house like Jacobs or Barberians...

              2. It's a weird suggestion, and I can't vouch for the food, but a friend of mine recently had his stag dinner at the Red Violin, on the Danforth. It's a Brazillian Steakhouse and it's all about meat. He said it was amazing. Not a true steakhouse, but a meat oriented, guy type place, with live music. Nearby are a ton of bars and watering holes for afterwards, including Allen's (great scotch menu) Globe (great food and a rooftop patio), Mambo Lounge (Cuban) and many others.

                1. I would go to Barberians Steakhouse its not that much more than The Keg for vastly superior meat, and service. The wines are super and they have private rooms as well. To cut costs bring a big bottle of red, ($35.00 corking fee) but with a magnum of Amarone from the LCBO you still come out ahead. Lots of parking and reservations are a good idea, desserts are available for two (Crepe Suzette is really fine there). Lots of free pickled veggies/bread and if you don't get to Toronto much it will be more memorable than the Keg. The location is on Elm st behind the hospital for sick kids so tons of parking. 10 min drive from Rogers Centre, and its a safe area at night enjoy. Note picture by my name is from there.
