May openings and closings
Another month bites the dust! What are some Boston-area restaurants that are either opening/closing in May, or what is some news about restaurants that has come out this month? I'll start--a new Irish pub called Grumpy Doyle's is coming to Reading, moving into the space where Emperor's Choice has been, Also, a new New Mexican (and no, that's not a typo) is coming to downtown Salem. It'll be called Howling Wolf Taqueria.

Saus on Union street looked to be coming along when I peaked in the other day. It's going into the space that was previously a homeless shelter/liquor store. Read somewhere online that it will be Belgian street food.
With Belgian street food, Union Oyster house, and McDonald's on one street in Faneuil Hall I can't imagine why anyone would venture all the way out to the south end.

Anyone know if Spun near the Powderhouse rotary is closed for good? The shades have been down every time I've gone by, but I asked the owner at East Asia last night and he didn't think they'd closed. It sure looks closed to me though, and I feel partly responsible for having ragged on their name so much...

According to their website, they are indeed open. It looked so closed on Wed night that I didn't think to actually try the door. They might want to consider this-- they lost our business.

Saw on Universal Hub today that Ka Carlos in Uphams Corner is no more, alas, a consequence of gun violence there last summer that killed their chef. http://www.universalhub.com/2010/double-murder-uphams-corner-restaurant-claims-anot . I really liked their Cape Verdean food, though it had been a while since I'd been back.

re: MC Slim JB
Ka Carlos had some kind of closing bash on the last weekend and then their equipment was auctioned off the next week (maybe even the next day). I think the space was still left configured for a restaurant (with ducting, bathrooms, access etc), but there would be resistance to another bar there and aside from the basics everything there was being sold. I think this all happened about 6 weeks ago, I think its just popping up because of the licensing hearing.

Zocalo is reopening in the Back Bay of Boston after closing its Brighton location earlier this month. The owner posted on my Facebook page that they are taking over the old Stix location, which is confusing, as Stix is still open in the Back Bay. I'm waiting to hear back from him to clarify this....

Not a restaurant closing exactly, but Peter Ungar of the Dining Alternative is moving to France to work a kitchen in Paris. The last Chefs Table will be in June. I consider a big loss to the Boston scene considering the one chefs table I attended was one of the best meals I have ever had.

I just noticed on Craigslist that a higher-end tapas-style Mexican place is opening in South Boston, and it will be featuring more than 100 different tequilas. No name and no address, though. Anyone hear anything about this?

I'm guessing that's Papa Gallo, from Legendary Restaurant Group (Max & Dylan's, Scollay Square, Tavern on the Water), 283 Summer Street in Fort Point. That's the old Persephone / Achilles Project space.

Noticed today that the signage is up for deuxave in the spot formerly occupied by Panificio on the corner of Mass and Comm Ave in the Back Bay. Anyone have any updates/info? A quick googling reveals it's being opened by the owner(s) of dbar, and by the looks of this craigslist post they are going after the fancy-schmancy set:

My plan the other day was a slice at Bostone (walked by Sat and they looked open but closed for the day)and a walk to Galleria Umberto for more pizza, but Bostone was closed. I went early and on my way back I saw a long line; maybe 15 people outside of Boston Kebab at a few mins before noon. Is that the usual?

re: 9lives
Yes - that place always has a ridiculous line for the "make your own salad" area. I usually either get a kebab sandwich, or put together a sampler from the mezze bar (love the zucchini and artichoke fritters, eggplant dip with mayo, and anything else fried) which also has the same salad items that people inexplicably line up for.

Walked by last night and it was pretty full. We thought about eating, but honestly it was 85 degrees in there and part of why we were going out was to get somewhere cool. They need to get better AC. We took a menu which looks pretty heavy on the standard Indian dishes, and the prices were mostly in the $11 range for veggie options and $12-13 for meat dishes. A Nepali set meal with appetizer, entree, lentils, rice, chutney and tea was $18 or 19. We'll go when it's cooler out. Anyone been?

re: Parsnipity
Went tonight. My DC and I split veggie mo-mos, a pumpkin nepali dish, and chana paneer. Foodwise I'd say it is comparable to Namaskar (which is our favorite Indian place in the area) or Martsa on Elm.
Atmosphere is fairly cheery and certainly not a hole-in-the-wall kind of feel. A bit noisy. I'd certainly recommend it if your in the neighborhood.

Not sure why I posted this earlier today in the "March openings" thread, but to repost:
Not certain it's new or just new-to-me, but I noticed what looks like a new churrascaria where I remember the old Cafe Belo being once upon a time on Somerville Ave not far from Market Basket: Mix Flavor Grill, or something like that. Anyone know this place?
re: MC Slim JB
MC that was most recently a Cafe Belo, but not the "old Cafe Belo." Its in a restaurant space which was attached to the original location of Bar Brasil (now called Samba Bar). So you could call it the "old Bar Brasil." It got relaunched once as a bar only, then as a restaurant (Mar e Terra or maybe that was later) that tried combining both spaces. Then I think the bar space became retail (Brazilian gospel books, cds, clothing), I think something opened in the restaurant and then briefly as the Belo. None of the bar/restaurants have succeeded since BB. The Mix Flavor Grill is similar to another suburban restaurant name, but I think its different ownership. They were advertising in Brazilian media for staff about a month ago, so they are probably pretty close to opening. Permitting has seemed to take forever for that location in the past. The advertising probably used stock photos, so I can't say much about it.
Cafe Belo a long time ago had a take-out only outlet on the corner of School Street. It had a bad kitchen fire though, and since then has reopened under a number of different ownerships. One of them was an excellent option for delivery food, until the quality dropped off. I think there is a Brazilian restaurant still operating there, but its been closed whenever I have been past. BTW the Belos in Framingham, Somerville, and Everett are all back open after their various scrapes with local government. I think they have said they will rebuild Allston, but I wouldn't hold my breath. In any case they should be in good shape going into the World Cup. If you want something different in Somerville, the Portuguese club on Marshall was serving Brazilian food again as of a month ago (I think both Brazilian and Portuguese plates of the day type offerings) but that can change moment-to-moment.
In other Somerville news what was Mr B's on Cross Street reopened a while back with a similar name "B's Restaurant and Grill" or something.

Looks like the second Genki-Ya is scheduled to open at Fresh Pond around May 20th. Never tried the Brookline location but it gets generally favorable reviews. I've heard it's Chinese-run. (Name is a bit Sino-Japlish, like Oishii.) It's squeezed in between the liquor store and a bank in the new building where The Ground Round used to stand. (By Trader Joes and CVS.)

Went to Tostado today in JP (Jackson Square). Apparently it opened 3 days ago. Seems like a great addition to the area--a little bit nicer than the other takeouts around without loosing the neighborhood character. I had a Dominican cheese tostado, which was good, though not earth shatteringly so and fairly priced ($4.99 for a huge sandwich). My husband had a limonada con fresa which was also very nice. Service was friendly, slow and mostly Spanish-speaking.

re: MC Slim JB
I believe Harry's is the name. Rattling my brain trying to figure out where this could be. A friend was at a party recently and spoke with said chef, but she cannot remember the name of the place. The only places I know of that are under construction, and opening soon are The Gallows and Harry's. I can't think of anything else, there are the newly refurbished spots on Tremont and some on Columbus that are empty and there is some sort of building going on across the street from Coppa, but none of those seem ECG related. Probably a bad rumor, but I would love to see some derivation of what happens @ ECG in the SE.
