May openings and closings

Another month bites the dust! What are some Boston-area restaurants that are either opening/closing in May, or what is some news about restaurants that has come out this month? I'll start--a new Irish pub called Grumpy Doyle's is coming to Reading, moving into the space where Emperor's Choice has been, Also, a new New Mexican (and no, that's not a typo) is coming to downtown Salem. It'll be called Howling Wolf Taqueria.

  1. Sal's Pizza is pretty close to opening at 150 Tremont; ground floor of a Suffolk dorm and on the Common.

    1. Does anyone know anything about a new place in the S.E. supposedly to be maned by former East Coast Grill crew members? I'm intrigued by the rumor but can't imagine where it is unless it's The Gallows or the new Flash's offshoot on Harrison.

I've heard no ECG-Gallows connection: only names I know there were the opening management team at The Biltmore. Is Harry's the place on Harrison?

        1. re: MC Slim JB

I believe Harry's is the name. Rattling my brain trying to figure out where this could be. A friend was at a party recently and spoke with said chef, but she cannot remember the name of the place. The only places I know of that are under construction, and opening soon are The Gallows and Harry's. I can't think of anything else, there are the newly refurbished spots on Tremont and some on Columbus that are empty and there is some sort of building going on across the street from Coppa, but none of those seem ECG related. Probably a bad rumor, but I would love to see some derivation of what happens @ ECG in the SE.

          1. re: MC Slim JB

The Chef/Owner of the Gallows, Seth Morrison, did indeed work at East Coast Grill back in the day.

The Gallows reports on their Facebook page that they "are close to opening". I don't know if this means days or weeks, but work on the space (former Sage) does appear to be progressing rapidly.

            1. re: MC Slim JB

Seth M. mentioned on his FB page that The Gallows will open in June.

              1. re: hiddenboston

I just walked by and The Gallows is having a private event tonight (must be a test run). The construction cardboard is off the windows and the restaurant looks ready to go. I did not see a menu on the door, but honestly it is so humid outside that I was racing home to the air conditioning and barely looked.

          3. A Scottish restaurant/bar is supposed to be opening up where Zon's used to be (Heard rumors that it might be called Wee Angel). When I talked to the owner he said he was aiming for mid-May. I'm psyched for another restaurant to open up in that area. I miss Zon's so!

yes, too bad about zon's. i particularly liked their burgers. any idea if the chef/owner(s) have new ventures planned?

              1. re: Kirs

It's actually going to be called The Haven rather than Wee Angel. The owner recently decided to change the name.

                1. re: hiddenboston

Ah, bummer- I kinda liked Wee Angel!

                  1. re: Kirs

I heard they're going to be wine/beer only. Is that true? Seems like a huge miss for a, well, Scotch restaurant.

                  2. A work buddy and I walked down to Popeye's the other day (I was having a hankering for their great red beans and rice), and it was closed with a sign saying they would reopen after employee training finished on 4/19/10. This was on 4/30/10. Does anyone know if they are closed permanently?

I've been wondering too. I just looked on the Popeyes web site and it's not listed. I guess they're gone for good.

                      1. re: catsmeow

That's too bad as it seems to have been an issue with the building, since it was packed every single time I was in there.

                        1. re: kimfair1

are we talking about the one in kenmore?

                          1. re: jgg13

Yes. Kenmore is closed. There's still one in Roslindale on American Legion Hwy that opened about a year ago.

Unfortunately I can't walk to that one from work for lunch for my red beans and rice fix. :~(

                              1. re: catsmeow

This is sad news indeed. I love Popeye's and even though I'd go only once or twice a year (when my arteries were feeling especially squeaky clean) I will miss their red beans and rice. And Cajun Sparkle. Dang.

                                1. re: yumyum

Hasn't been a Popeye's out my way in ages. Missed the beans and rice but found a recipe for it on one of the recipe clone sites which I've made several times. Very simple and tastes just like Popeye's.

                                2. re: catsmeow

I am so glad to hear there is a Popeye's near my house, although my pants may not be so glad after a few biscuits. Thank you for the tip!

                        2. Drity Dogs, Burgers and More is now open on Hancock St. in Quincy.

                          1. a new cambodian restaurant called thmor da (loosely translated as "the stones") has opened in the old floating rock location on shirley ave in revere

                            2. Looks like Krazy Karry's in Arlington is closed. Don't know if this happened in May or April - maybe I'm just slow to notice.

The name of the falafel wrap place on Route 9 West in Natick across from Scrub a Dub is Victor's Falafel Wraps. Someone asked the name quite some time ago. I think if opened in April. I have not been there but finally remembered to look for the name yesterday.

                                      1. re: edgewater

That was me. I also started a separate thread on Victor's a few weeks ago and no one responded. I still haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Went to Tostado today in JP (Jackson Square). Apparently it opened 3 days ago. Seems like a great addition to the area--a little bit nicer than the other takeouts around without loosing the neighborhood character. I had a Dominican cheese tostado, which was good, though not earth shatteringly so and fairly priced ($4.99 for a huge sandwich). My husband had a limonada con fresa which was also very nice. Service was friendly, slow and mostly Spanish-speaking.

                                  2. This belongs in a "opening some time this summer" thread, but it's pretty exciting news for North Shore folks: a second outlet of Cafe Polonia opening in Salem, MA, next to the Upper Crust at 118 Washington Street, and much bigger than the Andrews Square original, something like 100 seats.

Anyone know anything?

Anyone know this place?

MC that was most recently a Cafe Belo, but not the "old Cafe Belo." Its in a restaurant space which was attached to the original location of Bar Brasil (now called Samba Bar). So you could call it the "old Bar Brasil." It got relaunched once as a bar only, then as a restaurant (Mar e Terra or maybe that was later) that tried combining both spaces. Then I think the bar space became retail (Brazilian gospel books, cds, clothing), I think something opened in the restaurant and then briefly as the Belo. None of the bar/restaurants have succeeded since BB. The Mix Flavor Grill is similar to another suburban restaurant name, but I think its different ownership. They were advertising in Brazilian media for staff about a month ago, so they are probably pretty close to opening. Permitting has seemed to take forever for that location in the past. The advertising probably used stock photos, so I can't say much about it.

Cafe Belo a long time ago had a take-out only outlet on the corner of School Street. It had a bad kitchen fire though, and since then has reopened under a number of different ownerships. One of them was an excellent option for delivery food, until the quality dropped off. I think there is a Brazilian restaurant still operating there, but its been closed whenever I have been past. BTW the Belos in Framingham, Somerville, and Everett are all back open after their various scrapes with local government. I think they have said they will rebuild Allston, but I wouldn't hold my breath. In any case they should be in good shape going into the World Cup. If you want something different in Somerville, the Portuguese club on Marshall was serving Brazilian food again as of a month ago (I think both Brazilian and Portuguese plates of the day type offerings) but that can change moment-to-moment.

In other Somerville news what was Mr B's on Cross Street reopened a while back with a similar name "B's Restaurant and Grill" or something.

At least one of the postings mentioned that it is "privately owned and operated," so perhaps it isn't connected with the group behind Grassfields, Jimmy's, and Luigi's after all.

We thought about eating, but honestly it was 85 degrees in there and part of why we were going out was to get somewhere cool. They need to get better AC. We took a menu which looks pretty heavy on the standard Indian dishes, and the prices were mostly in the $11 range for veggie options and $12-13 for meat dishes. A Nepali set meal with appetizer, entree, lentils, rice, chutney and tea was $18 or 19. We'll go when it's cooler out. Anyone been?

I went early and on my way back I saw a long line; maybe 15 people outside of Boston Kebab at a few mins before noon. Is that the usual?

I usually either get a kebab sandwich, or put together a sampler from the mezze bar (love the zucchini and artichoke fritters, eggplant dip with mayo, and anything else fried) which also has the same salad items that people inexplicably line up for.

I think the space was still left configured for a restaurant (with ducting, bathrooms, access etc), but there would be resistance to another bar there and aside from the basics everything there was being sold. I think this all happened about 6 weeks ago, I think its just popping up because of the licensing hearing.
