Taipei - Taiwanese Delights at Formosa restaurant, Howard Plaza Hotel

Formosa's an old favourite of mine ever since I discovered it over 10 years ago - a place where one can have good, native Taiwanese fare within the comfortable environs of a 5-star hotel. Taipei food-lovers used to drive for miles to Formosa for a meal then. It was located on the 2nd floor of the hotel years ago, but has relocated to the basement floor these days.
A return visit last weekend proved just as satisfactory for me. Service in Formosa had always been nonpareil - you're made to feel like one of the family!
Some dishes ordered:
- braised clams & anchovies in fermented brown soybeans;
- spicy braised pork belly;
- deep-fried pork rolls in beancurd sheets;
- shrimp omelette;
- Taiwanese-style fried rice noodles
Hearty home-cooked flavors permeate in Formosa's cooking - it really felt like a home away from home.

What surprised me was that the Fujianese dishes here tasted *exactly* like similar dishes in Singapore and Penang (Malaysia) where the Fujianese-Chinese are the majority - which meant that those dishes in Singapore/Malaysia had barely changed through the decades, even centuries, since the Fujianese migrated there.
