US-23 between Flushing, MI and Ann Arbor next Saturday for Dinner

proclusian May 2, 2010 06:09 PM

I'm looking for any dinner spot recommendations because I have an afternoon function to attend next Saturday in Flushing, and will be heading back after only a small reception which will feature only appetizers.

It doesn't have to be fancy (although I don't mind if it is, either), as long as the food is good. There are three of us traveling together. The only two recommendations I've got are the Redwood Lodge in Flint, and The French Laundry [sic] in Fenton, so if anyone wants to give their opinion on those two, that's fine as well. Many thanks in advance!

In the "fancy" category; consider the Holly Hotel: http://tinyurl.com/hollyhotel
    It's a restaurant, not a hotel.

In the family style category; Ruggero's in Flint is my go-to place for lasagna:

I'm with rainsux on Ruggero's for a casual Italian dinner in Flint. They have been around since the 60's and I think still run by the same family....pizza is quite good. But my love for lasagna started there when I was in junior high school.....many years ago.

The French Laundry is also worth pulling off the expressway. I'm not sure if you have been there, but it's similar to Zingerman's in the size and selection of sandwiches. The extended menu has creative salads and I have never been disappointed. They used to have outdoor seating but I'm not sure if they still do, after their expansion.

Would you consider Mexican? I'm a fan of Border Cantina, and they have a branch in Brighton. You'd jump on I-96 West for two exits, and jump off at Grand River. Turn left, and it's just past Target. Their chicken dishes are particularly tasty and everything is made fresh.

If you do like Mexican, I give Sagebrush Cantina in Fenton the edge over Border Cantina. I believe it is the Long Lake Rd.(?) exit off US-23. Find the specs here: www.mysagebrushcantina.com

"intimate" or" fancy" it's not, but the Redwood is your best bet. You're in down to earth Michigan not NYC! enjoy.

Thanks to everyone for their recommendations so far. Still considering on this end (and dealing with two very indecisive travel companions).

Ruggero's sounds interesting, I've never been there. Italian food is my thing (I mean, when I cook at home, it's what I cook, mostly, and have been for the past 15 years, mostly northern Italian--Ligurian specifically, and some Roman and Neapolitan recipes too), so I'm always cautious about Italian restaurants, but sometimes they can be fun.

What's your favorite dish at Ruggero's if you had to order something besides lasagna?

@Verbal: I wish I was in New York City, so I could eat at Maialino, but you're right -- I'm not!

              I cannot answer your question. I've been eating at Ruggero's 3-4x/year since 1974 ... I
only go to Ruggero's for their 'deluxe' lasagna - uses italian sausage. Their 'regular'
              lasagna uses ground beef.

My wife prefers veal entrees at italian restaurants, and she's been happy.

proclusian, please keep in mind this is a very casual family place. The menu is not higher end by any means, but the food has been consistently good for over forty years. It is certainly a west Flint institution.

rainsux, if you have been going since 1974, were you going to the Chevrolet Ave location? We used to walk there from jr. high school and all chip in $1 for a pizza after teen club.

Yes. I spent five [5] years in the work-release program at Chevrolet & West Third Ave.

I'm thinking GMI? Then you were near Perani's which did not even compete with Ruggero's...IMO. Probably even closer to Sorrento's which was pretty good, too. I know they moved to Pierson Rd, but are they still around?

I'm putting my vote in for Redwood. I haven't been in about a year, but the few times I've been I have thoroughly enjoyed my meals there.
