Found: New England Style Hot Dog Buns

Peripatetic May 2, 2010 05:41 AM

There've been several threads on the search for New England-style hot dog buns:

I've found them at a place in Monrovia called the Market Grill that opened last November. I believe the owner is originally from Lowell, Mass. They bake the buns themselves. They're excellent, but unfortunately the dogs themselves are disappointing. The manager said they would sell the buns separately if I called ahead of time, but I haven't tried it yet. Note that they sometimes run out of buns early.

BTW their fries are outstanding -- better than Oinkster or Wurstkuche in my opinion.

Well, golly gee whiz... so happens I need to drop my car off at Suby Specialties just a few blocks over this Thursday morning, and I'll be looking for a few activities to keep me occupied. I know they don't open early, at least the dining part, because I've been past there a few times around nine and the chairs are all up on tables. But I will certainly check them out...

Thanks for this. I will have to give them a try!

Whoa! Could real Maine style lobster rolls be that far off?

The buns are half the battle.

Umm, no, I think they serve good imitations at the Blue Plate Oysterette on Ocean & SM. (Lucky me!)

But no CT style lobstah rolls to be found yet!! Have to make my own, now that I won't have to mail order the buns first!!

PS - OP, does the owner sell them raw, as in, not grilled yet??

That's my understanding. I haven't tried, yet . . . the day I was there they were down to their last bun, so had none to sell.

Thier minted potato salad is worth trying out as well. I keep getting their California Chicken sandwich the few times I've been there despite thinking "Hmm-I should try something new this time..."
