Soft Shell Crabs?

Does anyone know of a place in Minneapolis/ St. Paul where one can get some nice FRESH fried, soft shell crabs in season?

We wait for these babies all winter long, and we have had them in some excellent restaurants outside of the state. By FAR, the best place to have them in the cities is at Blue Point in Wayzata. Excellent oysters, super mussels, Bloody Marys that are nice and spicy, calm atmosphere with attentive staff. Nothing, however, comes close to the soft shells. They barely batter them, fry them crisply, lay them on some lightly dressed greens with tangy tomato/caper relish on the side, and serve a lemony aioli on the side to dip. They are clean and pristene. Call ahead. We have seriously had to reserve them! Walk across the street and stroll Lake Minnetonka afterwards. The best!

If you wish to make your own, Coastal has saoftshell crabs on sale every Wednesday. I will get some on occasion and make both grilled versions and fried versions.

I too am a big fan and have not a single good example in the Twin Cities. Stay away from Sea Salt. While their fish tacos are wonderful - their soft shell crab sandwich is borderline inedible unless you like to eat soggy greasy flavorless crabs.

I had the crab sandwich 2 weeks ago and it was delicious; the crab was perfectly crispy and tasty.

Chef Shack at the Mill City Farmer's Market has a nice fried soft shell crab sandwich in season.

The Chef Shack soft shell crab sandwich is AMAZING. They'll be all over different farmers markets and festivals during the summer: http://chefshack.org/
