Avoid Mammy's Cupboard - Natchez MS! Terrible service (honestly if you don't like tourists, then don't work in the service industry in a touristy area!) and if the food is home-made it's 'canned' style. Even used Cool Whip to top their pies.

I'll bite.

We ate at G's over the Christmas break and the food was awesome. I really wouldn't call it a dinner since it's a meat n 3 in a strip mall but AFA food goes, A1.

Big Spring Cafe (Huntsville) may be more diner like. Counter service, etc.

In Fayetteville, Tn there's The Chuck Wagon which is a meat n 3 in two single wides that are "T'ed" together. Great food and certainly worth a visit.

Which of these AL and MS places are *real* diners, i.e. old style silver dining car?

Not sure if it is a "real" dining car- if it is, they have added a ramshackle porch to the place, but Abe's in Corinth MS certainly has the right feel. you enter in the center and there is a counter running the full length from the left to the right with maybe a dozen stools. No tables or anything like that- not enough room!

Highly recommended too!
