Where will you be going to the park from?
On the East side - Dean & Deluca comes to mind, on the Westside - Zabars, Fairway, Citarella, Barney Greengrass.

Corner Cafe and Bakery on 89-90/Madison has nice packed salds/sandwiches. Also Food Emporium on 87/Madison has extremel good macaroni salad in refrigerator showcase which you can pair with fried chicken from Lobels further down Madison ave.

I am crazy about Corner Cafe's little roastbeef and fried onion sandwiches.

They are pretty much identical to the ones at Yura - it's amazing how much cross-over there is, but I prefer Yura.

Well not so amazing if you consider that they used to be partners and then split the biz....so I guess there are things that they used to do when it was one business, which each of them continue to do now that they are each on their own....I'll have to compare the sandwiches, because I am totally addicted to them! I usually get them at the Corner Cafe on 3rd Ave/92nd...

Exactly. Yura has a big sign in her window, inferring that these recipes etc. were all hers originally.

Here's a non-food suggestion that I didn't realize would be key until we were in the middle of our picnic... be relatively close to restroom facilities.

A picnic sourced from Barney Greengrass was an absolute delight. We told them what we were going to do with our food and they set us up with plenty of napkins, plastic cutlery, etc. They were very good about it.
And the taste of those wonderful foods enjoyed al fresco was incomparable.
But don't make the mistake we made; we assumed we could bring wine in (the way we'd done for theatre in the park). A very nice constable took our bottle away from us when he saw it. Thanks, Mr. Policeman, whoever you are -- for not giving us a ticket, too!

Well, perhaps you were being really obvious about it? :) My friend and I always bring wine in for our picnics (both event picnics and regular day picnics like last Friday). We keep our wine in a cozy thing- neoprene(sp?) thing. We've never had a problem.

We picnic in the park several times a year. We live in Murray Hill so we hit the Grand Central Market before we catch the train up town. It's expensive but they have just about anything you might want.

Sandwiched, the temporary cafe at the basement of the Whitney Museum on 75th and Madison, carries sandwiches by the Danny Meyer chefs. And you don't need to pay any entrance fee to visit the cafe.
