Red Rose Cafe, Weymouth -- barbecue?

  • 6

I've heard this place in Weymouth (800 Broad Street) is serving decent barbecue. I'm planning to check it out myself soon, but any reports in the meantime? I'm particularly intrigued because I've heard good things about the brisket, which absolutely no one does right around here.

  1. I guess this place has changed - when I stopped in a year ago it looked more like an old school Irish Pub. Here's their website: http://www.redrose-cafe.com. They have 3 positive reviews on Yelp.

    1. I haven't been there yet, but Steve and Brendan who are behind the BBQ are two of the most accomplished and successful pit masters on the competitive barbecue circuit. If the food in the restaurant is half as good as what they do at competition, you'll be blown away.

      Check it out!

      1. A friend of mine who's fairly picky just went, and said the brisket was "quite good." I am awaiting further details on it, apparently it was tender, but will need to find out if it was mushy tender, or slightly al dente. Brisket is so damned hard to get right, I've barbecued it about ten times, and only once did it ever come out perfect (took 24 hours for a whole 13 pounder). It had a good thick, crispy dark bark on the outside, with super crispy/fatty burnt ends, fat was mostly rendered out, but enough was left to keep it moist and delicious. Critically, it hit that very narrow band between underdone and overdone.

        1. I figured I would give this place a try last night. I ordered take out and they told me 20 minutes. The place is 3 minutes from my house so my friend went down to pick up food 15 minutes later and he waited in their for over 25 minutes and when he brought the food back it was not worth the wait. My wife ordered chicken quesadillas with fries. They were overcooked a great deal, the outside had burn marks and the chicken was dry (I think they cooked it at 475 for the 40 minutes we waited!). My friend got a chicken sub (I think it was club but not 100% sure) he gave it a so-so and had same complaint that it was too dry. We also ordered 2 pizzas, a small cheese for my son who thought it was "gross" and I got one with cherry peppers and something else and it was "fair" at best. The chicken wings we got on the side (5 buffalo insane buffalo and 5 teriyaki) were decent but not as great as they claim them to be. I was going to call to complain but what would that do, they may offer a credit to get the same lousy food again. No thanks, there are 2 many other area places to eat, in fact my wife had the said the Weymouth House of Pizza across the street would have been a much better choice. Oh well, you never know unless you try and we tried.

          1. I know this started with an 2010 post, but I thought I would update this since somebody just tried it, pigtrip.net says red rose cafe is no longer doing bbq. Either way it no longer seems like a good place to try.

The barbecue at Red Rose had a lot of promise. The pit masters who were there briefly left to start New England Barbecue and Catering in Canton Mass. Their website says they do take out Tuesday - Friday. Coincidentally, I'm hoping to give it a try today or tomorrow as business takes me to the area.
