Cinco de Mayo celebrations in LA
My birthday happens to be Cinco de Me-o, which meant little growing up in Connecticut but should be a reason for citywide celebration here in Los Angeles. I would like to fully cash in on this this year, which should entail getting drunk on Dos Equus and margaritas with hundreds of other poseurs at a anglicized Mexican joint. Where should I go? In the past, I've hit Olvera St, and found it lame and lacking. I'm thinking somewhere like El Compadre, El Coyote, El Cholo, Malo, etc, which can accommodate me and maybe 20 drunken friends. Food doesn't matter, since I plan on finally hitting up Cinco De Mayo Tacos in Culver City for lunch. (I've always figured that the oweners of said place must be livid as to nearby Tito's popularity despite inauthenticity.)

Good luck and happy birthday! As you probably know, Mexican restaurants in LA are absolute madness that day. I attempted El Compadre a few years ago and I think a group of 6-7 of us waited 2-3 hours for a table. The place is pretty small and I can't really imagine trying to fit a group of 20 on Cinco de Mayo, but with enough Cavadores shots, who cares! If food doesn't matter, then I would check if any of those places take reservations and go with that place. After my painful experience, I've never wanted to try it again and have always gone with the old adage, Mexican restaurant on St. Paddy's Day, Irish pub on Cinco de Mayo :).
