Your recommendation: Union Square/Nob Hill area, moderately priced, quintessentially S.F.

Our hotel is two blocks north of Union Square. Will be arriving just before dinnertime, with an appetite. We're not fancy, but love good food and good service. Suggestions within walking distance would be appreciated.

  1. What day are you arriving? If it's today, it's probably too late for some places I'd recommend because you'd need reservations well in advance. If it's sometime in the future, you'll have time to make reservations.

Sorry, this afternoon. Holes in the wall where there wouldn't necessarily be a line are fine. Thanks.

You could walk down to Beldon Alley (parallel to and between Kearney and Montgomery and perpendicular to and between Bush and Pine) where there are about eight or nine restaurants of different types next to each other. My favorites are Plouf, Tiramisu and the Catalan restaurant whose name escapes me right now. Check them all out and then pick one. Sam's Grill on the corner of Beldon and Bush is probably the most "quintessentially S.F" of them all. You could also walk a few blocks further down into the financial district to Tadich Grill, one of the oldest restaurants in the City, which does not take reservations. Perbacco and Barbacco are right next door to Tadich, are both Italian and owned by the same chef and are both very good, as well.

I tend to think of Belden Place as an escape from San Francisco to Paris; I love it, but would not consider it quintessentially SF

        1. Perbacco would be my choice followed by an after dinner cocktail at Rickhouse
