Reagle Beagle: A Near Miss

So wanted to like this place and the Board seemed positive. Knew I didn't like the room: I've always felt claustrophic in that long narrow space and find it cold and dark. Went early with family. Service: very friendly, nice waitress, no complaints there. Bar: ok but not smashing. Had a Petite Flower (something with elderberry, lemon, etc.) that was nice but hubbie's martini was only ok and friend's Reagle Beagle cocktail was like a margarita but a bit on the sweet and bland side. Very good side of grilled asparagus and good macaroni and cheese. Ok mussels but not ones you'd put on your "top 10." (not nearly as good as either washington square tavern or fireside grill). Scallops were fine but the risotto they were served with was gummy and not at all appealing. But the big disappointment was the hamburger: the fries were ok (not great and, again, not as good as the Washington Square Tavern) and the bun was ok but the burger was greasy and tasteless, as if the meat was second-rate. I'll always try the burger first because it seems to me that's the thing a pub has to get right. This one got a D. I know there must be things to like here, but I sure wish they'd got the burger right!

Oh I am really sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience. I had a pretty outstanding meal there a few weeks back and now find myself wanting to head over there pretty often. Im curious as to others opinions about the burger- I have considered heading there just for one! Was it just an off night there for teezeetoo?

I've definitely had better luck at the Regal Beagle myself: nothing earth-shattering, but solidly prepared upscale comfort food, decent (if goofily named) classic cocktails, good service. I like the room, myself. Not many options like it nearby in Coolidge Corner: I can see why they're doing booming business.

In the words of Randy Jackson "The Beagle is just alright for me dog". I had the most amazing lamb chops their last time I went, but both the artichoke app and the mussels stunk. I side with teezeetoo here about the Wash Tavern. I've been here an uncountable amount of time and have never once had a bad app or entree. The only complaint I can come up with about The Tavern is the wait, which I guess is a weak complaint. Don't worry, The Beagle will survive due to lack of competition.

I went to Regal Beagle last month and ordered the burger. It wasn't the best burger I've had but it certainly wasn't a disappointment. gs about. While the burger was tasty overall, the brioche bun was a lot of bread and quickly filled you up. Plus the bun was just a bit too buttery for my liking. My favorite part of the dish though were the house-made pickles. The pickles were a not overly sweet version of bread and butter pickles and added the perfect sweetness to each bite of burger. The fries were tasty but not necesarily stellar.

I hope it was just an off night and that you'll have better luck there next time (if you return).
