We're Philly chowhounds planning a trip to Mt Rushmore and the Black Hills and the Badlands. Looking for good restaurants all along the way. Spending 2 nights in Rapid City to start, then leaving for scenic roads and byways and places like Deadwood, Lead, etc. Would appreciate recommendations.

My favorite restaurant hands down in Rapid City is Corn Exchange. The food is delicious and MJ, the owner, always finds what is local especially meats and fish. Last time I was there about a month ago, I had fresh trout caught in nearby Spearfish. Simple preparations done well. Make reservations on weekends. You can find their profile on Facebook for the latest offerings.

My friends like the Alpine Inn in Hill City for steak and potatoes done well and homemade desserts.

For breakfast I like Colonial House on Rushmore Blvd. My favorite is the French Toastie, which is french toast with local chokecherry syrup and vanilla sauce. My husband likes the Public Works omelet and caramel nut french toast.

While you are in Rapid make sure you go to Prairie Edge, which has an amazing selection of local artwork and native american handicrafts.

I second Alpine Inn. It's a favorite spot for our family.

Also, If you get a chance to explore Custer State Park and the Needles, I'd recommend driving to Sylvan Lake and enjoying a drink at the beautiful lodge. http://www.custerresorts.com/sylvan-l...

Thanks for the rec of Colonial House! I was on a 5 week road trip around the U.S. and had no idea where to turn for breakfast in Rapid City.

Colonial House offers a pretty interesting and varied breakfast menu using most of the basic ingredients. What REALLY sold me, though, were the huge cheese danishes and caramel rolls and pecan rolls in the front bakery case.

I got a bagel egg sandwich to eat there, and it was nicely put together with fluffy scrambled eggs. So as not to seem too piggy, I got my peach/cheese danish to go. These are the largest pastries I have ever seen, one can completely fill a large to-go container. Light, flaky pastry dough, filled with a not-too-dense cheese filling and fresh peaches in a light glaze. This is a danish I will have dreams about for years to come. Perfect road trip fuel when the back roads of Wyoming started to become a chore to navigate.

I am glad you liked Colonial House. I love their apple crostadas and their pies. Did you go to Prairie Berry Winery. They make wines from local fruits that are very good which I believe is hard to do. I have tasted some other local wines and they are interesting to say the least.

We always make a point of eating breakfast at Colonial House. They do it right.

Second Corn Exchange. Very good food. Although my friends and I liked Delmonico's Grill slightly better. The Kona rubbed ribeye was unbelievable.
        Didn't like Minerva's at all.
