I am going to be bringing my Sister in Law to DC for the first time and she loves great food. Any suggestions on a good DC eatery within walking distance of the National Mall/Smithsonian. We will be tourists for the day so will need something that accepts "Joe on the street" dress. Thanks!

The cafe at the National Gallery of Art (main building) has a special menu right now devised by Michel Richard. Highly recommended and no extra walking involved.

      Is this still going, though?

Central is within walking distance to the more Eastern destinations on the mall.

Cafe Atlantico is close to some areas of the mall.

If you walk up to Penn Quarter Poste has a nice patio to enjoy and good food. There are lots of other places there though too. Matchbox, Zaytinya, Jaleo, Rasika, etc.

If you are over closer to the White House good sandwiches can be found at Breadline, there is a new place opening next door called Roti, but I don't know the ETA.

Roti's open, and there are a few reviews on the board.

If you search for mall you will get lots of responses. You are also near Penn Quarter which you can search, it has a ton of restaurants. It would also help to know if you are weekday or weekend because often places can be closed for one or the other for lunch.
