West Village Mexican - recommendations?

Looking for a good Mexican joint in West Village, fun drinks and the like. Thinking about Diablo Royale - any reviews?

Diablo Royale is fun but the food isn't that good. Mexicana Mama used to be good and it is now straight up terrible. I'm not sure what happened but somewhere between 5 years ago and last month they stopped caring. I think the best Mexican in the W. Vill by FAR is Mole'. Great service, large portions, fresh food and tasty drinks.

Mole is not in the West Village, unless they moved from E. Houston @ Allen. Did they? (I also think it sucks, but I know it has its fans.)

agreed w/small h - mole is beat. as is diablo royale. the food at cabrito is way better than both of those places, but also more expensive.

La Palapa on 6th is a solid choice as well. Slightly upscale from a taco joint, but in line with Mexicana Mama, maybe a little cheaper and certainly less cramped. Outdoor seating is a positive assuming you are OK with 6th ave seating.

I generally avoided Mexican when I lived in the W. Village. I personally don't care for either Mexicana Mama or Mercadito Grove, but I know lots of people like them. The latter at least has more space and will probably be a little more boisterous (M. Mama is pretty cramped). Mercadito Grove may have the distinction of the weakest margarita of my life, if you care about such things. I think Cabrito might be your best bet.

Florencia 13 (unorthodox name, it's an LA street gang), in the village village, is a little underappreciated. It's firmly cal-mex with a vato theme. The food is passable (though I haven't met a chile relleno burrito I don't like). But they have the best margaritas in the city. They remind me of the stuff I used to sneak as a kid.

Diablo Royale is not that great and Cabrito has mixed reviews, though I have always been happy with Mercadito Grove.

I second Cabrito. Haven't been in a while, but used to love Mexicana Mama.
