Soft Shell Crabs in CBD/Warehouse?

a
Andrew in Alabama Apr 28, 2010 06:46 AM

Will be visiting NOLA on May 14 weekend. I love soft shell crabs, and had one of the best ever at GW Fins last year.

This time I am staying at the CBD and am looking for something in that area. Any suggestions will be welcome.

I am not averse to walking over to GW Fins again (love that place) but would love to hear of alternatives.

AinA- I had the most amazing soft shell crab (pan fried) of my life at Cochon last time I was in NOLA, and am visiting again in a week and am praying to the culinary gods that they will have it on the menu again. It's worth a call to see if they'll have it...if they don't, I'll be calling GW Fins to try and find some!
    Good luck!

You might do well calling a few places ahead of time (2-3 days before) to see whether they are running any soft shell crab specials. Soft shells have only just started appearing in the last week or so due to the cold weather, so many restaurants may not be carrying them on the menu. Some of the more upscale restaurants run specials this time of year featuring soft shells. In the CBD, Cuvee and Cafe Adelaide strike me as places that might run specials, but maybe other posters will have more suggestions. If you end up going to GW Fins, I would call ahead to make sure its on the menu (or check the website, which I believe they update daily). Uptown, I have had excellent soft shell crabs at Coquette. Again, you would need to call in advance. You would also need to take a cab here, but its a short ride from the CBD/Warehouse dist.

We had a fantastic soft-shell crab appetizer at Emeril's last week. One of the biggest, sweetest soft-shells ever. But as noted, one should always call to be sure its offered (it was a special.)

Perhaps the Bon Ton Cafe on Magazine or Grand Isle on Fulton St in Harrah's Hotel. Maybe even Dragos in the Hilton on Poydras.
