Eats near NY Presbyterian Hospital (York Ave)

marleymom Apr 27, 2010 04:22 PM

I'm a former NY'er, now living in DC area. A friend is having surgery at NY Pres. Hospital this week and will be there for a few days. I wanted to give his wife a few restaurant suggestions nearby the hospital, but I haven't lived there in 20 years. Just casual, good food that's convenient to walk to and where she wouldn't mind eating alone. Take out suggestions would be good, too!

i hope your friend has a successful surgery.
from my visits i only remember mike's bagels and tasty deli? they weren't anything special but they got the job done. i also remember getting food from a nuts to nuts cart lol...sorry i didnt help much. harlem is kind of near by so u can pick up some chicken and waffles from amy ruth's if you cab it.

Daffy - Thank you for your good wishes and the help...but he's at the other NY Presb - the one on York and 68th on the UES. I did find some old posts for that area too, but didn't know if there was anything else.
Again, thanks for trying - if you know anything there, I'd be glad to hear about that too.
(but now you have me wanting chicken and waffles! :)

Cafe Luka on 1st Ave is the coffee shop that I like in that neighborhood; the usual diner food, agreeable staff. Over on York, Tropicalia is also nearby; tiny Brazilian place with just a couple of tables, an interesting variety of good food. Right next to it is Sugar Loaf; even tinier, just soups & sandwiches & various beverages. Another couple blocks up York at 76th St is Gotham Pizza; have only been there once, but I thought the pie was pretty good. All are takeout-able.

OK, this one will sound silly, but for a bit of a breather you might try Sotheby's, there on York at 71st St. Go in, right to the elevators, up to the top floor, and the lunch room is right there. It's just sandwiches and salady stuff (I think) and soft drinks, but the roof deck is a nice place to sit and collect ones thoughts. The exhibition for the upcoming sale of impressionist and modern art begins on Friday, which they usually put on the top floor, so that could be nice, too.

York Grill is on York & 89th and it does not have "excellent" food - it's a neighborhood place that it not worth traveling to.

              Thanks to all who responded....
My friend's surgery went well and he's on his way back home after just 2 full days in the hospital. His wife got out just a little bit, but will likely be back up there again, so all the suggestions have been filed away. Thanks especially to RPK for the Sotheby's idea - she did go there on Friday and saw the exhibit and ate at the cafe and loved both. That one would have never occurred to me and it was a nice break for her.

If it's nice weather, how about eating outside? There's a great Caribbean food truck run by Yvonne across the street from the hospital. Really good jerk and curry dishes.

Can you provide the cross streets of the truck you mention?

How late is Yvonne there with her cart? We were hoping she was there late in the evening as we are visiting from out of town. Any idea? Thank you!
