I wish I could remember where I got it last time, but I've been striking out now.
None of the nearby discount/Latino oriented markets had any, only generic (Mediterranean) oregano in the cell bags. Looked like buds and stems from wacky weed :-). What's with these guys?
Ditto on F4L, Vons and Albertsons. Local Ralphs, you must be joking. Cost Plus, nope.
WF had some 'natural' Mex oregano from New Mexico, 1/2 oz for a ridiculous price. Pass. Will check S&F before driving all the way to Penzeys ....

Struck out at Smart & Final, unexpectedly erratic spice selection in Lawndale.
@westsidegal, I'm a South Bay guy so driving to Santa Monica (City Of Rare and Expensive Parking) is studiously avoided. Good for everyone to know that Penzeys has a SM location, but I'll go to Torrance.

I think Vons and most normal Southern California supermarket chains carry it in the section where they have spices in those little plastic bags... the big plus here is that it won't be that expensive either.

Are you talking dried Mexican oregano? You can buy it in the regular McCormick spice section at the regular grocery store (e.g., Ralph's). That being said, not every store will have it cause not every store carries all of the available spices.
Honestly, I've gotten it before, and it pretty much tastes the same as regular oregano. I guess, technically, they are different species or whatever, but I assure you, regular oregano is a fine substitute.
If you're looking for fresh, I don't know where to get that (I've seen oregano at some Mexican markets but I don't know it's actually Mexican oregano or just regular oregano).

Yes, dried. My understanding is that Mexican oregano is a bit more pungent than the standard supermarket variety (although in the great pantheon of supermarket spices, all are equally stale!)
Looks like I'll be substituting for my Penzey's Turkish, which is likely more potent than whatever Mexican variety winds up on the shelves of Ralph's.
