While searching for good pupusas in CT, several people mentioned that they'd had really good pupusas in the DC area. Could someone name a couple of those places for me? I'm going to be there this weekend. Thanks.

  1. Irene's Pupusas on Georgia Ave. near the Wheaton Metro - these are the best I've had around here.

I've been curious to try pupusas at Ercilia's for quite awhile after reading lots of positive comments on the board -- and I finally did so. Much to my surprise, I was really disappointed. I had loroco y queso, a revuelta, and a frijoles y queso. They were very flat with not much filling (especially the latter two). They were also kind of greasy and not as hot as they should be. In contrast, the ones I've had at Irene's were much thicker, hotter, fresher tasting (especially regarding the tender corn exterior) and really seemed homemade.

I'm left wondering what was going on. Maybe the regular cook wasn't there for some reason? Maybe I was there at the wrong time of day? Maybe I was at Irene's at exactly the right time?

No complaints about the price, however. Three pupusas set me back a whole $5.50.

I haven't been there in a while, so maybe things have changed. They used to make them to order, by that I mean they don't start to pat down the dough until you order, so I can't imagine them not being hot.

Taqueria El Charrio Caminante in Arlington still reliably puts out great pupusas.

      2. If you want to embark on a "pupusa crawl," you might want to head right to the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of DC, just off 16th Street north of Adams Morgan, where you can sample several restaurants in one area. MtP has a large Salvadoran population.

used to be a good Salvadoreno place on Columbia Road (tiny, about the size of an office and the few regulars glared at us like we were freaks) but darn the food was good, south side of the street sort of across from Chief Ike's.

        2. I was actually disappointed with Irene's the last time I went. My favorite pupusa place is Sabor, in Silver Spring in the corner of a tiny strip mall right at the corner of Flower Ave. and Piney Branch. The pupusas are great, and they're super friendly there.

          1. El Paso Cafe on Pershing in Arlington has delicious pupusas (and margaritas!).

            1. El Ranchito out in Winchester (2018 South Loudoun) is very good. I know--other board, but still quite good. All the usuals--cheese, pork and cheese, chicken, loca...

              1. I like Pupuseria Dona Azucena.

                1. Old post, I know. Pupusas, though perfectly fine, really aren't trip worthy. I wouldn't hop on a train, cab, or bus for one, put it that way. If you are staying near Chinatown (7th and H St, NW or so, Grand Hyatt, Embassy Suites), the closest pupusa place is on 4th and K, NW. I can't recall the name of the place (G&J Deli), it's on the corner, you can't miss it. The next is probably near Logan Circle, walk up 13th or 12th (probably 13th), there is a Salvadoran place on the left side of the street below street level. These are within walking distance. All other places mentioned require some kind of mechanized transportation.

**G&J Deli appears to now be "Henry's Soul Cafe," probably no pupusas here...***

Maybe not pupusas, but what about saltenas? (which I found out may be abundant in No FFX county).

                    1. re: Dennis S

Unfortunately, no saltenas within walking distance of Chinatown that I know of. El Pike and the bakery next to it (not affiliated) on Columbia Pike, Arlington have good saltenas, but you know that.

                  2. Much agreement with kelly5612. Just to jump on the bandwagon, I'm up in Salvadorean food country, and I've found Sisys Restaurant (3911 14th Street Northwest, Washington, DC 20011) to be pretty delicious, if you want a specific recommendation. Crema and Tapatio with your plantains, too! Hooray!

                    1. El Rinconcito.
