dinner recommendations for Columbia-Ellicott City for 4/30?

Hi--
We're staying in Columbia the night of 4/30, and want to go to dinner with a total of six adults on Friday, 4/30 in the Columbia-Ellicott City area (maybe 30 minutes driving time each way max). We particularly love East Coast seafood (we live in San Francisco, and the grass is always greener), and we're looking for a place where the total per person, not counting drinks, would be about $35.00 max. Any suggestions? And by the way, next time you're in S.F. the taco truck on Harrison St. at the corner of (more or less) 25th St. is to die for. Thanks for your suggestions!

Personally, I'd drive out to Hunan Taste in Catonsville. I've been very impressed with that place, the food is great and the decor and service far exceeds expectations of what I expect from an authentic Hunanese restaurant in a stripmall. Also in Catonsville, the Catonsville Gourmet would have you covered when it comes to seafood. I can't think of a better seafood recommendation in the Columbia/Ellicott City area, unless you're looking for Korean Seafood.

I'll second the Catonsville Gourmet recommendation. They don't take reservations, although you can call ahead and put your name on the list. It's BYOB, which keeps the cost reasonable.

Agreed. R.C. Rogers is pretty much across the street, if you want to pick up a bottle to bring along.

For Baltimore seafood--LP Steamers on Fort Ave is one of my favorites. It's about 30 minutes up 95 and is easy to get to from the highway.

I also like The Rumor Mill in historic Ellicott City. Not a seafood restaurant but I like their food (Asian-inspired) and they have an extensive array of infused vodkas that are delicious.

There is a great seasonal dinner outside your driving radius -- Woodberry Kitchen in Baltimore. Terrific meal if you want to drive and could get a reservation.

But if you're staying inside Columbia-Ellicott City, then I would suggest one of the local places that go with a similar effort to cook local produce / local seafood meat -- Iron Bridge Wine Co in Columbia, Bistro Blanc in Glenelg, or Catonsville Gourmet in Catonsville. Jason1 is right about Hunan Taste, but I assume you can get great Chinese in SF. The other three restaurants do seasonal menus, maybe offer you something that you can't get at home. Iron Bridge and Bistro Blanc are specifically seafood places, but I think they both have seafood dishes. You can read lots about all three restaurants on this site or on local blogs.

I believe you meant Hunan Legend. Hunan Taste is the one in Catonsville next to H Mart.

Yeah, when I initially read your post, I assumed that your idea of the boarder was off. It's definately Catonsville. I always think of the river as being the divider.

It's a bit farther than 30 min, but if you want seafood with nice views, head to Annapolis. Cantler's, O'Leary's, and Carrol Creek are all good seafood restaurants in nice locations. You could make an evening of it, and walk around Ego Alley (the pier) and Main St.

If you want to venture into Baltimore, Mamas on the Half Shell in Canton has great Maryland Style seafood. Also, the Ships Cafe in Catonsville has local style seafood, I haven't eaten there so I can't vouch for it:

Someone recommended LP Steamers, I would steer clear of that place, it's not very good.

I'd advise Catonsville Gourmet over Ship's. I haven't had the best of luck there for seafood.

Just don't fall for the lobster mac'n'cheese at Catonsville Gourmet. The lobster is way overcooked and doesn't taste very fresh. Everything else I've had there has been good to very good.
