Dried beans?

Where can I find a wide variety of dried beans in the DC metro area (MD preferably)?

Most places sell dried beans in plastic bag-like containers and they only sell the usual kinds (black, kidney, chick pea, butter). I am looking for loose beans that are more exotic- heirloom, cranberry, and stuff like that....

If you're looking for more exotic beans, I think your best bet would be to order them from Rancho Gordo http://www.ranchogordo.com/ instead of looking for them in stores.

I've been very happy with the quality and variety of the beans. They're not cheap though, averaging about $5/lb.

I can 2nd ranchogordo for quantity and quality when the beans actually cooked. For some reason I couldn't get all of the beans in a batch to cook, some where left still too al dente if i may. Any suggestions. Tried cooking the hell out of them and soaking overnight.

Aphrodite Greek Imports in Falls Church (near Bailey's Crossroads) has a good selection of greek and middle eastern type beans and lentils, but it might be a little far for you. I don't think they have heirloom varieties or anything like that.

Thanks to both of you! I will check out MOMs today and Aphrodite this weekend when I can get to VA. It is a little far, but if I stock up and just go every once in awhile it should not be a big deal ;)

I think you can get dried beans in bulk at My Organic Market.
