Places To Stop Between NOLA And Avery Island?

SO, I think that we're going to spend a day going out to Avery Island in a week or so. Since the drive is about 2 and a half hours each way, I figure that a roughly midway stop each way would be a good idea.

We're thinking about lunch on the way over and a plantation tour on the way back. Anyone have any recommendations for a good lunch spot, or other decent stops between NOLA and Avery?

I have heard negative things about Prejean's from some people I know in the area. When we ate there it was wonderful. They were nice big servings and we fought over the leftovers the next day.

Ate at Prejean's in Lafayette last week - the smoked duck and andouille gumbo is awfully nice, great as a soup n sandwich lunch with half a crawfish po'boy. <--utterly delicious, both of them. The portions at lunch were modest, but we were happy. Our friends in the area count it as a top fish restaurant, although a little pricey. Given the high level of food in the region - even what you find in gas stations could blow your mind - it's all good.

Depends on whether you are going via I-10 or Hwy 90.
90 takes you through the old country towns and by Mosca's.....lots of oppourtunity to stop
at produce stands and bars along the way.

The Yellow Bowl in Jeanerette is about mid-way, slightly closer to New Iberia. Fabulous crawfish etouffee. 337/276-5512

Victor's Cafe on Main Street downtown New Iberia is a classic stop for breakfast & lunch.

Take bug spray. LOTS of bug spray. Between the factory tour and jungle gardens you could spend the majority of a day, especially if you pick up a lunch or serious snack and take on the island with you. Take a cooler with freezer bags for that boudin you find!

Thanks, all. My traveling companions just nixed the Avery Island trip. They decided that it was a 6-hour round trip drive, and they just did not want to ride for that long. So I will have to do it on my next trip alone. I'll save the info for then.

If you take 90 it's probably around 3.5 hours round trip car time. But there's not much to eat on the way if you take 90.
