Any dining recommendations for my dad's 60th birthday near Fullerton Area? Must be either Korean or a steak house...

Hello! I can pretty much tell you about a restaurant 25 miles +/- the 323 area but I have no clue when it comes to restaurants near my dad's house in Fullerton. I need to find a local restaurant that can please my fickle Korean father for his birthdate. I do not care about price point since it is his 60th birthday but it either has to be Korean or a noteworthy steak house and close to Fullerton. Yes, I can take him to Ruth Chris but that's so.......blah. I've heard of the Summit House but I've never been so wondering if it's a nicer place to take my family than let's say, Ruth Chris.

Can anyone please help me?

  1. The Summit House is nice-more special than Ruth Chris for sure. I was there for a special event with a pre-set menu so I didn't get to have any of their regular menu items. I hear their prime rib is really good. Taps in Brea might work too-we took a friend there for his birthday and although they're more well known for seafood, he ordered steak and enjoyed it!

Totally second these choices. I've been to Summit House, and have enjoyed their prime rib immensely. My friend is a huge fan of their lamb and duck dishes. I also LOVE Taps...service is spectacular and the food is very good as well...their oysters and drunken mahi mahi are a couple of my favorites.

I think the appeal of the Summit House is the view; it has a special occasion feel to it. I've had their prime rib and thought it was okay (I prefer rib eye over prime rib, so we prefer Mastro's over all other steak houses). In the area, we like Taps for their seafood (endless oysters!) champagne brunch. The Cellar has a very old school, dress-up, dark & candlelit kind of feel with great service. I think all three of these have different types of ambiance with food all equally good.

If you're looking for Korean, I'd recommend you go to Buena Park (which is a street or two away if your father is in west Fullerton/Sunny Hills area).

      2. We've been to Summit House several times for special occasions. It is high up and (from some rooms in the restaurant) you can see the entire valley - nice to go as dusk turns into evening to night and you can see all the lights. If you go, keep a sharp eye out for the left turn - it's hard to spot. They also have some areas set aside for private parties/receptions. I think there's a gazebo there also (to the north of the restaurant) - might be a good photo spot. I haven't been to Ruth Chris so I can't compare the food. It's sort of like an old English Inn, somewhat similar to Gulliver's.

        1. My favorite Korean BBQ by far is Lighthouse on Beach on the border of Fullerton and La Habra near Coyote Hills. Excellent variety of side dishes and good quality meats. When I go I usually order 1 less dish than the number of people in the party, unless everyone is a big eater.

          1. If you want to splurge, you could go to the Mastro's Steakhouse in Costa Mesa or the Mastro's Ocean Club in Newport Beach.

2nd! My favorite steakhouse, better than Ruth's Chris or Morton's IMO.

I've heard about a place in Buena Park called Honey Pig. Korean bbq, primarily pork on a dome skillet then they make fried rice at the end with all the drippings...

            2. Chomp in Fullerton...Tappanyaki

Disgusting. The only good thing they had was the Hawaiian brunch and that was, as far as I know, discontinued. The sushi is a horror, the teppanyaki is worse. You'd be better off at Benihana on Ball Road, not that I'm recommending that.

Come on, Really! Chomp in Fullerton. I thought the idea was to help other foodies on Chowhound............

I think Chomp in Fullerton is geared toward the college set, with food and prices to match.

I agree OCAnn, definitely not the place to go for a memorable Birthday Dinner. Unless you would like to remember one of the worst meals you have had on your B-Day!
