Restaurants serving local and organic menu items

I am trying to make the shift to eating more local, in season, and organic foods. I am also a mother of 2 young children. I'd like to find family friendly places to eat that are south of Indian School and east of McQueen/Mesa Dr. We live in Laveen and rarely make it pass those boundaries. Suggestions?

  1. Liberty Market or Joe's Farm Grill, both in Gilbert.

    1. Your boundaries don't make sense to me. Are you sure you don't mean *west* of McQueen/Mesa Dr? Laveen is west of that street.

      1. Also a little confused about your boundaries, but here are a couple anyway: the local chain Picazzo Pizza sources local and organic vegetables wherever possible. There's one at Westgate, or there was, last I checked. They are very family friendly and also good for people who have gluten or other dietary issues. Organic and local vegetables also goes for Grazie Pizzeria, both locations, in Scottsdale and Verrado; Cibo and PastaBar downtown.

Italian food in general seems to lend itself to being kid-friendly and since the Italians eat seasonably, any authentic place will also follow that philosophy; it's a good start.

        1. If your boundaries are indeed 51st Ave and Mesa Drive, south of Indian School, I can think of a few places that focus on local and/or organic foods, though, they might not be exactly family friendly.

Urban Grocery (where the Downtown Phoenix Public Market is held)
          Gallo Blanco
          PastaBar
          District
          Caffe Boa
          Quiessence
          Morning Glory Cafe
FnB (just north of Indian School in Scottsdale)

Of these, I'd say that Morning Glory and the Urban Grocery are the most family friendly, with Gallo Blanco being sort of borderline, depending on the time of day--morning through early evening probably being the best times for families.

FnB and PastaBar are very good, but I don't see them as places that young kids would necessarily appreciate.

I hope the parents on the board can correct me where I'm wrong and/or offer some other suggestions.

Depends on your kids, I guess. My 3 & 5 yr olds love FnB, Caffe Boa and Gallo Blanco. Morning Glory Cafe is great too. The Farm is amazing for kids. The kids haven't been to Quiessence yet but they'll love that too.

            2. Essence Bakery in downtown Tempe emphasizes local and organic items. It's a laid-back place and fine for kids, but has breakfast and lunch only (and is closed on Sundays).

I wouldn't take a preschooler to Quiessence if I could help it unless it was clearly one of those nights when they were acting angelic-- it's pretty quiet and upscale. Otherwise The Farm is great for young kids, either the Morning Glory Cafe or the Farm Kitchen; just be prepared to stay longer than you'd expected, there's a lot of bug examining and chicken watching to do there. If you want to do your grocery shopping at the same time, the food court-type options at Whole Foods on Ray Rd aren't bad either. You could also have a pizza at Nello's right next to the Ahwatukee Farmers' Market-- I don't know that they use organic/local ingredients, but it is a local place, and you can shop for local veggies next door.

The link here is to the Nello's in Tempe for some reason-- there's one in Ahwatukee too...

              1. Also in Ahwatukee, just across the parking lot from Nello's, I'd recommend Hillside Spot. Same owner as Gallo Blanco (Doug Robson); committed to as much local food as possible. Very kid-friendly - they even have a kids menu. I especially love their Tunisian salad (made with local, seasonal produce) pulled pork sandwich (made with locally raised, all natural pork) and the hamburger, made with meat ground fresh in house. But everything is good.

It's not that bad of a drive from Laveen to Ahwatukee east on Baseline and then south on 48th St. Hillside is on 48th St. and Warner.
