Reuben, Monte Cristo sandwiches in SD

I've never seen a Monte Cristo on any menu in SanDiego. Anyone know of a place that serves one?

Also, who serves the best Reuben in SD?

Thanks!

Must be the Monte Diego: Baked Egg Bread, Smoked Ham, Fontina Cheese, Grilled Pears, Strawberry-Currant Jam. Not the classic Monte Cristo but l'll try it just the same. Thanks!

      1. re: mangiatore

Spare the pears and currant jam but, the egg bread is essential!

    2. Linkery makes the best Reuben in town. I like the corned beef at Old World Deli on 30th as well but have not tried their Reuben.

Saw that Quality Social makes their own pastrami for a reuben but have not tried it out yet.

I was gonna say Linkery's Reuben was pretty darn good, but it's not always offered. You have to watch for "Reuben Tuesdays" and things like that. Linkery's pickles are great, btw, if you are open to more spices and less sour than the classic deli dill.

Bet you could talk LH into making one BC, even if you're only a part-time carnavore! and please no jam or jelly! this is not a breakie sammie.

PS.. goes great with a cold one!

Cut from the same demented cloth but eats meat cstr!
I am going to try and make a veggie burger patty melt this weekend..
I like to call myself an annual or semi-annual patty melt/double double/longhorn chicka..
I have to have so much mayo and 1,000 dressing so I don't taste the meat..remember that I am from OB..hee hee
Everything taste good with a cold one or two!
            ; )

            1. re: Beach Chick

OB!!! extra heavy mayo please! veggie patty melt, don't tell Longhorn, you'll be banished from those naugahide seats.

"I am going to try and make a veggie burger patty melt this weekend"

Now, that's just wrong. An abomination. I'm surprised at you and frankly, a little disappointed. This is a clear violation of the Sacred Code of The Patty Melt.

                This is a sad day.

                1. re: Fake Name

Fakey..you know the love is still there for the beloved Patty Melt..
I loved in one of your posts you wrote how you had a PM at Majors and it wasn't good and it 'dishonored' me..busted gut for days on that one!
All right, all right..going down to Longhorn's this weekend and I'm busting out a Patty Melt with extra cheese, 1,000 and a picture of Coors Light..
                  Just for you Fakey!

                  1. re: Beach Chick

Hey BC, you should think about a ' BC's Annual Patty Melt Chowdown' at Longhorn's. Maybe take over the whole joint for a chow session!

                    1. re: cstr

LOL..it would probably be us two with DD showing up and begging us to go to Bully's East!

                      1. re: Beach Chick

BC, you're a HOOT! Nah... all you need to do is just put a 'stickey' on the CH SD board, play according to the CH rules, and let'er rip! This may just fill the joint including DD!

                        1. re: cstr

There is the CH Yahoo! group with which you could arrange something like this.

                          1. re: Fake Name

As BC would say, Fakey it can be done on your own, with a little organizational effort. I've done this on CH in the past. Interested in the process? You have a widespread presence on the SD board that can make this a lot of fun and an excellent hit. I think the event should be named in honor of BC's jonesing for a veggie patty melt? as you and I have commented to BC in posts on this thread. I'd be glad to share the task with you to make it happen.

Well, they do offer a buffalo patty, and I've had them make a PM with it. Josh, can you eat buffalo?

                              1. re: Fake Name

It's probably best to take this planning discussion off-line so the mods won't get upset, they usually suggest that anyway. Then come back with a new post for the event. Go an email address?

                                1. re: Fake Name

I'll normally eat buffalo, depending on where it came from.

                                  1. re: Josh

Well, in this case, it comes from the Longhorn. Previous to that, who knows?

Fakey, If you want to do this on the CH SD board, which will get great results, please send me an email at cstr7@hotmail.com and I'll email back the detail on how to structure the event and assist you with the effort. Grazie!

            2. There is an old diner, called Claytons, in Coronado, it is actually more of a sandwich counter. I have had my only MC Sandwich here, and it was pretty good.

DZ AKINS has pretty good reuben sandwiches.

              Good Luck.

                  1. re: stevuchan

For a Ruben gotta have excellent pumpernickel with a great crust or a stretch maybe marbled rye, again with a great crust. Also, imported swiss and homemade 1000 island. I've yet to find great bread in our area, nirvana would be finding homemade corned beef.

                    1. re: cstr

Linkery's Reuben is good. They make their own corned beef.

                    1. Weirdly enough, Stout Public House on 6th Avenue has a pretty good Reuben. From what I can tell they make their corned beef in-house and slice it thick.
