Try Back Forty or Northern Spy Food Co. (both American), Max or Frank (Italian) or Belcourt (French). I've always enjoyed my meals at these places.

Italian -- Barbone. Fun, fits your budget, great neighborhood, and incredible owners who treat you like guests in their home.

American -- Back forty is super casual and tasty. I've heard good things about Northern Spy but have never been.

How many people? When do you plan to dine? Are you making a reservation or just walking into a restaurant? Does the $50 include tax, tip, drinks/wine? Would something like Prune be too quirky?
