Great New Orleans restaurants near Mother's

My hotel is near Mother's and I'm flying down tomorrow. Any great NOLA restaurants as alternatives to Mother's which seems not so great from what I've been reading...?

  1. Restaurant August is several doors down the street. Go to Elizabeth's if you want a great breakfast.

Palace Cafe on Canal, or Cochon/Swine Bar on Tchoupitoulas. Depending on what time you get there, you could also to go to Galatoire's for a long Friday lunch...plan on hours!

elizabeth's is nowhere remotely near Mother's. and overpriced to boot. but the praline bacon sure is good.

as for the OP - Mother's was good about thirty years ago. the guide books have refused to update since; perhaps out of ignorance.

the OP doesn't say which meal s/he is looking for.. but if it's a roastbeef poboy, try P&G over on 345 Baronne. much better. Capediville is a new place just opened up w/ a varied menu, from mussels to burgers:

        http://www.capdevillenola.com/

...i tried it out last nite and it wasnt too bad. good truffled mac & cheese. nice cocktail menu, real ice cubes -- the low-air variety that dont melt in 10 minutes.

August is also very near, with a usually good $20 3.5 course lunch menu. Le Foret is also very near w/ a similar menu for $25. Rambla is a nice southern + tapas fusion spot.

i am not a fan of Serio's on St. Charles, but i am a fan of The Store on Gravier. great salads and other specials.

          +1 for The Store

The ruben (kind of a different take on a reuben) there is really nice, made with rib meat and pressed. Shrimp and grits were good too.

Kibbles. READ what the OP asked.

OP did not ask for a restaurant close to Mothers but rather "any" great NOLA restaurant as alternative. It amazes me what some folks will post without fully reading what the OP asked. Is Elizabeth's a better alternative than Mother's. YES. Thanks.

And I mentioned August also. Thanks for adding to my post.

            1. re: Littleman

The title of the OP's post says "Great New Orleans Restaurants NEAR Mother's" so I think Kibbles was correct in pointing that out to the OP who is not from NYC and she just wanted to point that out.
Mother's isn't worth it, the OP is from New York, so I'm sure he is used to walking around, so near is also relative.
rschwim, hope you avoided the rain out there today, can't remember when you are playing but tomorrow isn't supposed to be any better.

yes, i agree - it is amazing what some people will post without reading.

as for repeating August -- looks like you're new here. it is quite common, and in fact helpful, for others to chime in with repeated recommendations. in this way suggestions are validated by multiple posters and readers can get an idea of the popularity of a particular recommendation. "+1 SomeRestaurant" is a common way to do this, but is not the only way.

                chill dude.

OK I chill Dude. You didn't read the content and I didn't read the title. We are even. I have been around NOLA all my life my friend. There's not much I don't know other than the food is the best in NA. Good luck.

                  1. re: Littleman

Incorrect. I read the conent and parsed it correctly. You did not.

                    Now, back to the food.

              2. re: kibbles

What is wrong with Mother's? I have been a couple of times for limited menu items but I love their black ham biscuits. Is there anywhere else to get them (or something similar)? Am coming to Fest this week and want a small breakfast before I go out and gorge myself at the Fest.

            2. You will find quite a few restaurants near this area. Are you looking for something similar to Mother's in food/price range or just someplace close to the hotel? For fine dining, there are many options: August, Cuvee (have not been since the change in chefs, so I can't vouch for the quality now), Le Foret. If you walk up Tchoupitoulas street, you will find Tommy's, Emeril's and A Mano. Further up are Cochon and Cochon Butcher. Cochon Butcher is a low-key deli/sandwich shop, but much better quality, and would be a good alternative to Mother's, although it will probably be a 10 minute or so walk. For drinks, the Swizzle Stick bar at the Lowe's Hotel is excellent.

I second the Bon Ton Cafe. Very good food and drinks, and great service. Located on Magazine St., just north (toward French Quarter) of Poydras St. (one block from Mother's). But Bon Ton is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
