New Bakesale Betty location in Downtown Oakland

Soft open today. At 9am, they had 4 kinds of cookies - choc chip w/ and w/o nuts, molasses and oatmeal. One pie - rhubarb orange ($4 slice and $25 for the whole?) 3 scones - apricot/almond, ginger/pear and lemon/raisin.

I think the prices are not set yet, but I got 2 cookies and 3 scones for $6.75 (and they threw in an extra scone so a great deal!)

They'll start selling their fried chicken sandwiches at 10am today.

No iron boards or chairs out yet, so you'll have to bring back to the office to eat.

Does this mean the Telegraph Avenue location has been closed?

The original location is still doing a booming business. There were about 50 people in line when I drove past yesterday around 2.

It's interesting that a place with such a limited menu can draw such crowds daily.

Famous quote from Red Skelton, who remarked of the well-attended funeral of the feared and hated Harry Cohn, "It proves what Harry always said: Give the public what they want and they'll come out for it."

I passed by there myself at 11:30 Saturday and there was a line out the door of the orig. location

Maybe Yogi Berra had the right idea here - no one goes there anymore because it's too crowded.

I walked by last night and it looks like there's a lot more space inside than at the original location, so a fair number of people could eat inside in bad weather.

The irony boards are out there now for lunch.

Line was about half a block deep at 1PM. Same annoying yuppies in line. Same mediocre fried chicken and bland slaw. They had already run out of egg salad.

            Got a free molasses cookie.

I wish Bakesale Betty the greatest success. I was among their biggest boosters when they first opened. Somewhere along the line the chicken got dryer and the slaw milder.

            I guess I've moved on.

I've noticed the slaw getting milder but it might not be their doing, discussion here about milder jalapenos: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/702855

I had a FC salad the other day and thought it had cut bell peppers, not jalapenos. Any way, thanks for the report, I guess I'll have to let the lines die down before going to uptown. Lunch crowd-wise, they are in a prime location.

Thanks for pointing me to that very interesting thread about Jalapenos.

There are ways around milder jalapenos, if it is reducing the end product they could add paprika to the flour mixture of the chicken to help the jalapenos or just find a better pepper, etc. No need to let the sandwich suffer.

Cindy, the site's autolinking has added a place link to the original location of Bakesale Betty, which you probably didn't want to do. You should see a blue "remove" button that you can click to make it disappear. Now everyone has the ability to add new restaurants to the Restaurants and Bars database, so you can enter the new location when you have a chance. Thanks.

Thanks, I didn't realize the original link would be autolinked. I removed it.

New location is next to the old site of Louisiana Fried Chicken, at corner of Grand and Broadway, right across from Luka's.

Most people don't know. If posters take the time to enter new places into the database, then it will link to the correct spot most of the time. You can do this buy clicking on the gray colored bar "Manage Your Links" when you post and selecting "add a restaurant or bar".
