Best Mexican Products

There is plenty of debate about where to find the best baguette, but where can I find the best corn tortillas in Manhattan? I know to head to Despaña for embutido, but where can I find the best Mexican chorizo for taco night at home? And what about fresh masa or quesillo?

Basically where does a home cook go to shop for the best of this great cuisine?

  1. For Mexican ingredients, Edible Manhattan really liked Las Palomas:

For masa, you may need to go to the Outer Boroughs.

There have been previous topics about finding high quality fresh masa in Manhattan, but typically nobody's been successful.

I've tried Nixtamal. They're good, but I wasn't so bowled over that I'm itching to go back to Corona.

I'm aware of Las Palomas but am hoping other posters have purchased and tasted the products at one of our many carnicerias and mercados and can report back on flavor and quality.

Don't know if you noticed this, but there is a short review at the bottom of this page:

    2. I go to Zaragoza on 1st avenue near 13th st. It's small, but it's convenient, and they usually have fresh tortillas. The owners are very nice and it's a family run shop. I have also seen comparatively good Mexican ingredients at the Essex Street Market. Not California quality, but hey, it's New York.

      1. Mexican Deli, Inc. at 2711 Broadway (bet. 104th & 103rd) has a few authentic items but not a huge selection by any means. They make they're own authentic mexican soft corn tacos and tamales on Saturday and Sunday. Probably only worth a visit if you live nearby on the UWS.

If you stop there, you could also stop in at Las Palomas (on W100th) in the same trip. It's a teeny mexican grocery but they have lots of stuff.

oops - sorry! just realized this was an old thread that got reanimated.
