Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in China and Southeast Asia (inc. Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore)

2 months in Malang, Indonesia

I just got accepted into a two-month-long language program in Malang, East Java (so excited!). I'll be staying with a family but definitely want to do some eating out as well. What's not to be missed?

that's sort of the sense I've been getting... :-)

    2. I was in Malang a couple of years ago, and one restaurant stood out: Warung Inggil, which specializes in East Javanese food. I hope it's still there. The details of the restaurant at the following link from malangpedia.com -

Thanks, that looks like a really useful website and a great restaurant. I'll have to pull out the dictionary and take some time to read it well. (Saya belajar bahasa Indonesia satu tahun, tapi saya belum pintar.)

You'll get by. I'm "luckier" in the sense that I speak/read Malay, which is somewhat similar to Indonesian, so I can understand the local language better. Basically, the first paragraph of the malangpedia link on Inggil stated that:

“If you happen to be a culinary visitor and loves an olden-day atmosphere, you won’t feel complete if you haven’t visited Rumah Makan (Eating House) Inggil in Malang. An eating house that not only serves all kinds of special Javanese food, but also offers a unique environment. At the first glance, this eating house looks like a classical Javanese building on the outside, and when you stepped inside, you’ll encounter an Olden-Day Malang atmosphere. To me, this eating house is like a museum showcasing Malang in the olden days, with great views and also lots of old photos of Malang.”

On the paragraph regarding the dishes he ordered, the writer stated that:

“Usually, when I dine there with my family, our favorite menu consists of 2 portions of fried gurame fish, 1 basket of rice (enough for 5 persons/portions), 1 portion of fried kangkung (water spinach/convolvulus), 1 portion of stir-fried bean-sprouts with shrimps & salted fish, pressed tempe (fermented bean-curd) which is my mum’s favorite, fried chicken for my children, sambal terasi (chilli paste/dip) with fresh vegetables/salad, and 5 glasses of warm drink, as Malang can be quite cool in the evening.”

Well, I do hope you get to visit Inggil and also other Malang restaurants. Remember to update us on any good places you find.
