Stuck at Hilton Hotel in Silver Springs - looking for a reasonably price restaurant within walking distance for a party of 12.
I am attending a meeting at the Hilton Hotel in Silver Spring (8727 Colesville Rd). I would really like to get a group of people out of the hotel for dinner on a Monday evening. Ideally, it would be within walking distance. Olazzo looks interesting, but it sounds like it is small and they do not take reservations. Thoughts?
Ray's the Classics -- check for distances, but it is downtown and the Hilton can't be far.

IIRC, Ray's doesn't have room for large groups (together at least).

Ray's most certainly does have room for large groups, and they take reservations.
I've had parties of 14 and 20 there in the past year.
Call ahead as far in advance as possible - for a party of 12 they might want you to use the "banquet" menu, but it's the same price as the regular menu, just a somewhat limited entree selection to ensure that everything can roll out of the kitchen at the same time.

Good to know, thanks.

8407 Kitchen Bar got a nice write-up in today's paper (which might mean it will be packed in the next few days or weeks - call first). It's within walking distance. http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog/restaurants/8407-kitchen-bar,1157866/critic-review.html
I liked Ceviche on the one occasion I ate there a couple of years ago.
I ate at Olazzo in Bethesda a few weeks ago and posted about it here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/6356...
I assume this is the same food as is served at the Olazzo in Silver Spring. It is very reasonably priced, but if it's quality you are after, I'd say go elsewhere.

Anyone been to 8407 Kitchen Bar? I've got a rez for Friday. Any rex? Dishes to avoid?

It just opened in the last couple of weeks, but Pedro's a pretty awesome talent, so I expect pretty good things. But you can never judge a place so soon after the opening.

Cubano's is close and has a touch of class, although it is inexpensive.

If your group is adventurous you might try Ethiopian at Addis Ababa (8233 Fenton St) about 4 and a half blocks away. They have lots of room upstairs for groups.

totally retro but a lot of fun... Sergio's. Order steamed mussels, simple pasta, fresh fish, the veal chop and all is well. Order fancy sounding stuff... well you have been warned!

excellent old school italian. last time had assorted homemade ravioli special (wild mushroom, lobster and I forget the 3rd) was very good. not very much for ambiance.
Rays the Classics is excellent for steak, burgers and seafood
Ollazzo is more upscaled gourmet italian
Cubano's also is good as is Mia Rancho.

Big second for Sergio's. Their fish soup is very tasty. Its a little quiet, but we liked that. Never had a bad meal at this great old school Italian.

Two thumbs up for Sergios!

Plus of you're lucky, Sergio will sing a quiet aria at your table. Roasted potatoes rock, green beans taste like they are out of a bag

Mi Rancho in downtown Silver Spring is awesome. I love their dry rubbed ribs... great seasoning, fall off the bone tender and not too messy. Their combo platters are also very good if you want to try a bit of everything. Margaritas & sangria's are great and you can watch them make their own tortillas

Well we ended up at Sergio's. Turned out to be a great option since it was raining and the food was very good for the money. Beware for large parties (>10) - they have a smaller and more focused menu. That said, everyone thought the pasta was outstanding and the rockfish and crab cake entrees were excellent. The tiramisu was "ok." The lemon italian ice was a big hit. Service was attentive and not over whelming.
