Last time I was in McCall's Meat & Fish, the new butcher shop on Hillhurst in Los Feliz (next to Mexico City), they had them.

It never hurts to try the bait shops and barges that cater to fishermen. They often carry live sardines and anchovies... :)

Before Santa Monica Seafood moved from the Colorado St. location to Wilshire Bv., they used to have them on (very) rare occasion. Maybe they still do -- call and ask.

I've seen them at Whole Foods (Arroyo), and also the seafood vendor (J&P West Coast Seafood) at the Saturday Pasadena farmers' market.

Japanese markets often have them. Marukai in Gardena is the biggest and best of them all, and they usually have them.

i think probably the mitsuwa in torrance is the biggest and best, but marukai is good, too. and they both usually have sardines ... about $3 a pound.
