A few hours ago I had dinner at the Island Foods at King and Dufferin. I ordered the goat roti and forgot why I took a break from eating at the Island Foods establishments. Forgot how stingy they were with the meat portions and curry potatoes they wrap in your roti. I actually had to kindly tell the girl to please put some more goat meat into my roti. She was still a little hesitant and maybe gave me one or two more pieces of meat at most. Also, I forgot just how soggy the rotis came at this place. It has a lot more liquid than some of the other places I've been too.
Have to admit as for actual flavour, I really do like the delicious taste of the curry there. It's definitely a lot better tasting than Ali's in the Parkdale area and cheaper. Since I don't really like wet and soggy rotis, I'll just order the curry goat or chicken dinner that comes with rice and peas next time. I have no problem when it comes to drowning lots of curry gravy sauce all over my bed of rice. LOL Yummy!

re: Minister of Kebab
Love the rotis made at Vena's. The owner is from Bangladesh and his wife is Guyanese. Years ago they used to be at the Queen/Bathurst area, but moved with growing competion from Gandhi's.
Although Gandhi's rotis are pretty good, they are not traditional West Indian rotis which use madras curry (South Indian yellow coloured curry). Ghandi's actually use a variety of different and authentic Indian spices in their dishes and then wrap in a roti. Very different tasting from the Guyanese, Trinidadian or even Jamaican rotis. However, even though they do taste different they still taste pretty damn good. :)

The only place that I know of is Ali's on Queen west on the north side just east of Lansdown. I've been there many times now and each time the product has been really good!

Don't know exactly what your downtown boundaries are, but Island Foods at King/Dufferin and Caribbean Roti Palace at Bathurst/Bloor are both Trinidadian.
When I worked in the Dundas and University area, I used to frequent Coconut Grove located at 183 Dundas Street West during lunch hours. The young Guyanese couple made better rotis than many of the Trinidadian places I've been to. Anyway, a few years ago some new owners took over and I don't really know the quality of the food. Been meaning to pay a visit for a long time, but I'm never in the district.

Correct - although I think they still have another location up on Don Mills Rd., and they also have a spot in the food building at the Ex every year. I miss the Grange location as it was close to my office, but at least I live right around the corner from the King & Dufferin shop.
Regarding Coconut Grove mentioned by YummyYummy - I've found it to be a bit hit & miss since the new owners took over, but I still grab lunch there once in a while. Still no Island Foods, though...

re: garfield
I always pass by the Coconut Grove, so I'll definitely give that a try especially since it's become more Trini. I'm also up in the Annex sometimes, so I'll drop in to Caribbean Roti Palace. Too bad that Island Foods moved that far. I've got no car, so it would be a bit of a pain to get out there. Thanks for all your suggestions =)

re: chrisco
Heh. Coconut Grove used to be a staple for me when I worked downtown. haven't yet tried them at the more recent location under the new ownership. I'm curious to do so now.
CRP is a 10 minute walk away for me since I moved back into the 'hood a few months ago. I'll also have to revisit them as I always liked their stuff as well.
Are there any other non-pedestrian roti shops for a pedestrian within the Queen-to-St Clair Spadina-to-Bathurst grid?
