really good sandwich

one of the best sandwiches in NY right now might be the Firehouse Special at Defonte's, thin sliced roast pork, broccoli rabe, fried eggplant cutlet, and provolone--clearly related to classic Philadelphia sandwich (Tony Luke's) but not trying to be exactly that--on good bread, makes a pretty satisfying lunch.

  1. Defonte's makes a nice sammich, a nice sammich!

    1. this sounds like it's worth a trip. do you know what cut of pork is used?

      1. Sunny and Annie's sandwiches on Ave. B and 6th St. are wonderful. Some of the best I've had anywhere in New York City. It's a take out joint but you can retire to Manitoba's across the street and eat at their bar.

Somehow this place has flown beneath the CH radar but there's an extensive Yelp thread.

It's also mentioned in NY Magazine's article on DeFonte's. Scroll down to the last paragraph.

        1. I really enjoy wichcraft's sandwiches. Bouchon Bakery's are pretty good too.

          1. I've had the Firehouse Special @ the 21st Street store, and Pearlie I have to say OMG YES! YES! YES! This sandwich is a real study of culinary judiciousness, each ingredient enhancing the taste of the other ingredients in the sandwich. I've also had the shrimp parm po'boy. Well made but not nearly as transcendental as the Firehouse special.
