Chateaubriand

This place looks fun & it was hard for me to choose between Chateaubriand & KGB for the innovative restaurant choice. I'm drawn by the atmosphere at Chateau. but KGB got consistently better reviews on food. Which would you choose between the two?

Also...Part of me just wants to see some of these places I've read so much about...Is it possible just to stop and have some aperetifs at the Chateaubriand bar before going to dinner elsewhere or is that not really done?

  1. I should keep quiet but I won't.
    KGB's interestingness wins over Aizpitarte's excess.
    But I'm in a tiny minority.

      I think of Aizpitarte as Vegas or Macao. You have to accept you may lose big. Or win big.

    2. There is always a crowd at the bar. Locals or known-to-the-house perhaps but probably not. If you really just want to go take a look, I'd say, "Why not?" As an aside, Aizpitarte hangs out more behind the bar than in the kitchen.

      1. Where are you from? KGB is a place, the like of which you'll find dozens in major US cities, especially NYC. Often better there. Chateaubriand is unique and special, but more of a gamble indeed.

          Is Chateaubriand open for lunch? Le Fooding is a bit confusing. Under "Horaires" it says it's only open from 7:30 to 11pm. But then it goes on to say "no bookings at lunch". Does that mean no reservations for lunch or closed for lunch? I'm guessing the latter.

              I read somewhere Chateaubriand had stopped the lunch menu (which was very cheap) I took from that that they had stopped the lunch service but could be wrong. I believe I also read that they had acquired the place next door and planned to open that as a more casual bar/cafe. Can anyone confirm?

              I am with Soup on this.

              We found the ZKG/KGB style of east/west fusion food to be unremarkable, we hail from Sydney so the herbs/spices used and the flavour combinations were quite "ho hum" for us. But if this is a novelty for you then it is a good place to experience the food.

              Le Chateaubriand isn't an easy restaurant as some of the dishes and flavour combinations do challenge the taste buds. And it definitely polarises opinions with food texture often being as important as the taste. For me it has the style and ambition of the new wave of Spanish Basque restaurants like Mugaritz (another that polarises), although here is is done to a tight budget.

              If you are a very experienced diner who likes to push the envelope and experience chefs who push boundaries head to Le Chateaubriand. If you are closer to the start of your journey to explore the breadth and range of foods then KGB will be an interesting albeit a safer bet

              Drinks at the bar should be fine. Remember Le Chateaubriand isn't in the centre of town it is out in the 11eme whilst ZKG/KGB are in the heart of the 6eme (tourist central) so possible a reason for all the reviews.

                Hm, this really does make me want to consider the switch. I live in Dallas, so not quite NYC, but still big city & we have tons of Asian fusion & good restaurants...I was assuming Paris would still be up a few notches though.

                As for my dining experience/preference...I love unique dining experiences, and this sounds right up my alley, but my two friends are picky eaters, which makes me question. What to do, what to do! Send them to a "safe place" and go eat by myself?? :)

                  I don't consider myself particularly adventurous nor do I have a particularly sophisticated palate. I'm not a very picky eater, though. I really enjoyed Chateaubriand. I didn't find the flavor combos/textures weird but perhaps I just lucked out when I visited--only went once. I would certainly return given the opportunity. I suppose if your friends are truly picky eaters I might avoid it. Go by yourself. I did.

                      Indeed that does help. And now I really want to go. It's a shame they don't serve lunch anymore! I guess it would be pretty wrong to ditch my friends for one of our first two dinners, especially since it's their first time in France. I'm willing to risk them not liking it but I wouldn't want to insult the restaurant if they leave food untouched...

                      sigh.

                  I really don't want to get into a big dispute with Soup and Felice and others but I lived 25 years in NYC and still go every few months as well as the West Coast and my food friends from the East and West Coast big cities do not find Ze to be findable elsewhere at all.

                  And, while I originally thot Aizpitarte was cute with some preps (the live shrimp burnt at the shell end at La Famille), I got very tired after a decade of his serving an unadorned, unanythinged beet at Transversal and stuff like a banana milk-shake dessert at Chateaubriand or chicken & fries like one gets in a school cantine at Refectoire or the lumpy Gulag soup called vichyssoise at Cheri bebi - and the fact that he might have been the " concept person" behind some of these rather than the chef only makes it more telling. Parigi says it's like Vegas or Macao, recall that the bottom line with gambling is that one always loses because the house always wins (in the end).

                  Finally, their 13 E lunch was truly a bargain.

                3. Interestingly the "Worlds 50 Best Restaurants 2010" just came out and Le Chateaubriand made it in at Number 11, which is the highest ranked restaurant in France....!

                    Never thought much of that list.
                    Not saying that due to the French rankings, either.

                      It's like many if not most popular lists. Why does anyone watch the Oscars? Sports scores? They have little to do with our lives but it's akin to sticking your tongue in a cavity: because it's there.

                        It depends on how you think of it as a list. Taken literally then I would agree any "best of" list is flawed because food is such a personal experience. However, if you look at it as a snapsot of which the worlds food critics, writers and chefs rate as their personal favourites I think it is useful. I know the ones I have been lucky enough to try in the top 50 are all very good and it can lead to some interesting choices that differ from the accepted norms.

                        It is interesting to contrast Le Chateaubriand with France's other 5 entries, it is the most accessible with a €45 five course menu, compared to many of the others whose prices are far higher (€90+ dishes).

                          Of course there are personal tastes but even that has to be limited. Whose tastes?
                          A very blurry snapshot, perhaps. Also, "what is hot" is known and known to be different from what is best. There are some real abominations, as far as I am concerned, on that list. And considering that so many people are involved, there should not be anything like that. If it were the list of one person and they put some shocker on there, it is more acceptable if still improper. A lot of this list is about who is friendly with whom, I believe, Not that that does not occur with critics and other lists, but I think it is more obvious in this case.
