Thai Gulch menu suggestions

I'm taking a friend out for Thai somewhere in or near Thai Gulch (Sherman Way, west of the 170). He doesn't eat red meat, and dislikes onions (but will tolerate them if necessary). There will be 3 or 4 of us, so I'd like to get 3-5 dishes, no more than one of which has red meat or is heavy on the onions. And this is something of a treat, so I'd like to avoid dishes that would be available at your generic West-LA Thai place. Spicy is good, weird and funky flavors are good.

Can anybody suggest a restaurant and a menu?

  1. Krua.

Pad Thai Krua Thai, which is a great deal more interesting than bog-standard pad Thai.

Shredded papaya salad (som tum) with raw blue crab.

Pla dad deaw (fried catfish with cabbage slaw)

      Second Krua.

In addition to what DU mentioned, the shrimp cakes are addictive. Also sauteed eggplant with ground pork.

I've had the pad thai krua thai before, and it's fantastic, but I thought there was pork in it. Perhaps I was mistaken.

Pla dad deaw is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks.

      2. While Krua Thai can be good, spicy hot dishes can be elusive whether requested in English OR Thai. My suggestion is to go to Sri Siam and after perusing their menu which has many excellent preparations of dishes not common to the Westside spots such as the Sole with Green Apple Salad ordered VERY HOT that was so good that I had it for lunch last week and again for dinner the next night, if you don't read Thai ask the server for help with the white board Thai language menu on the wall. One dish to be discovered there is Whole Fish with Chilis and Herbs which I also order hot and is spectacular! Note that these fish dishes are listed as "Market Price" and that price varies with the size of the fish. When ordering for one person I try for a smaller fish and if I must share well, get a larger one! There are many other great dishes here, the usual standards done well plus a pretty long list of uncommon in the USA dishes that are often extraordinarily tasty!
