SUNDAY BRUNCH -- on the water (early mom's day)
My fiance and I are doing our first group mother's day a weekend early (on May 2nd). We would like to take our mothers out somewhere nice -- possibly on the water (Newport-Malibu ok). We live near downtown LA, and want to get out and make a day of it.
Interesting, inventive, fresh... We want to impress the moms. Small restaurants near the water would be the BEST. Also good restaurants in lovely hotels.
Hounds, help me!
I think it's a great idea to take your mothers out for Mother's Day a week early. I'm sure that you'll enjoy a much more pleasant and satisfying experience wherever you decide to go. One thing that I truly despise about dining "on the day", aside from the rush, is the typically abbreviated menus.
The Hotel Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica is a superb choice for an indoor Sunday Brunch on the beach. Their Veranda Restaurant serves brunch from 11am – 3pm for under $50 per person, including tax & tip, for a 3-course meal and bottomless champagne or mimosas. Food is very good and the hotel is an architectural marvel that harkens back to the early 20th Century in elegance and style. Lovely ocean views through panoramic floor-to-high-ceiling windows. Great place to wander around and settle back after brunch as well.

Cafe Del Rey and Jer-ne in the Ritz Carlton Marina del Rey are first rate but are adjacent to the MdR harbor, not the beach.
Geoffrey's in Malibu is on the beach - if you drop your fork, it's going in the sand. It's a beautiful building but you're a slave to the whims of the weather since you'll be dining deckside. The view is fantastic particularly when the weather is at least decent, but of the three places mentioned, the food comes in third.

+1 on the Cafe de Rey recommendation
valet parking with attended parking lot
sunday brunch, which is served until 2:30 is a three course prix fix menu that INCLUDES sparkly or mimosas for $35/pp.
the food is cooked to order, not steam-table yuck stuff
(had lunch there today. this place is on my regular rotation)

I think you're probably going to have to choose between interesting/inventive food and a view of the water, sadly. Still, if I was in your position, this is where I'd take the moms.
or i'd do the champagne brunch as casa del mar:
