I'd suggest Pizzeria Napoletana (Dante/de Gaspé), Bottega (St-Zotique/St-Dominique) or even Vinizza (Jean-Talon/Casgrain): all three have pizzas and pasta ranging from $12 to $25, I'd say. Via Roma is also a good one, but a bit more expensive.

Try BASI. Thought it was pretty good. Not cheap but not 35$+ for mains.

There is also Via Dante (on Dante, naturally) an unassuming trattoria with daily specials based on market availability. Or Tre Marie (Clark near Mozart), a family owned restaurant. Neither one is "cheap" but certainly not $35 for main dishes.

How is Via Dante these days? I remember it being very good indeed, but people on the board have said it declined in quality these past years. Have they got their act together?

I have not been disappointed in the past year! The gnocchi stuffed with wild mushrooms and the lobster ravioli... exquisite! They always have a market menu and a great little wine list.
