Mehak - Indian in East Boston

  • 8

I am happy to report that Mehak, serving "Halal Pakistani and Indian Cuisine," opened a few days ago at 329 Sumner Street in East Boston, across from the relocated Italian Express. Hopefully I will be even happier after I eat there. I got a copy of their menu, which has various lamb, beef, goat and chicken selections. Some of the usual suspects, some not. Almost all entrees are $8-$9. East Boston has been sorely lacking in the Indian department, so hopefully the quality is good.

  1. Cool and there is not that much halal Indian in Boston so hmmm worth checking out.

      1. We went to Mehak on Friday, opening night, and I was very pleased. My goat curry was delicious, companions had a chicken curry and a very good chicken palak--not the typical creamy rendition, but a lot of spinach (and significant butter) and great flavor. Garlic naan was also a step above most of what I've had around town. Got some freebies, too; chicken tikka (very good, tangy, a bit salty) and good veggie pakoras.

Pretty good crowd on Friday, but I hope it keeps up. Looking forward to more deliciousness there!

The owner is not seeking a beer and wine license by the way, he's keeping completely halal. I didn't miss it on Friday, but I had stocked up beforehand.

Thanks for posting! I look forward to going soon.

        2. We stopped by Mehak last night for dinner- there were two other tables when we got there but by the time we left it was a full house! Service was slow, but to be expected for a new restaurant.

We shared the keema naan- warm naan stuffed with a seasoned, ground chicken mixture. Super super yummy. Chicken curry had good flavor but a skimpy portion- lots more sauce then chicken. The bhindi masala was a bit burnt, but tasty. Sauteed okra and onions. We each had a delicious and HUGE sweet mango lassi. Prices are GREAT- a little over $28 for a meal that easily feeds two with leftovers.

All in all, a really good first experience. We look forward to going back.

          1. Three days after my original post, my wife and I got take away from Mehak (still reluctant to bring a 4 month old baby to dinner; we don’t want to be one of “those” people…;), I just haven’t had a chance to post. The short version: high quality and high value. We can’t wait to try more of the menu.

Thankfully this is not one of the “mild, medium or hot?” variety of Indian restaurants (and Pakistani, though I am admittedly not knowledgeable enough to make menu distinctions between the two). Dishes are prepared the way the kitchen deems they should be served.

Chicken Curry: I agree on the skimpy chicken portion remark of aecs, but the sauce was fantastic and, while not particularly hot, had a respectable cumulative-heat-factor.

Chicken Cholay (pieces of chicken cooked with chickpeas in thick sauce): I’m not sure why but I did not expect whole chickpeas in this dish, but that added a nice texture. Low heat and very tasty.

Note that despite the menu’s description of “thick sauce” for both the curry and cholay, the sauces of each were actually rather thin.

Aloo Gobi: we ate this as a side and it was the clear standout. I have never had Aloo Gobi like this. We make it at home and are now inspired to change our technique. This had a thick sauce, serious heat, and I can’t imagine not ordering it every time.

Garlic Naan: not as much garlic as I would prefer, but the naan was outstanding and the portion was very large.

The above, including rice (and a container of salad) was $30. Mehak will definitely be in our regular rotation, we hope they succeed.
