Evanston Update?

We are making our annual trip to Evanston. Hope to visit Oceanique for fish and Pete Millers for a great burger. Any other dinner suggestions? Wondered if there was a good Italian or ?? I read on an older post that Lucky Platter was located in Evanston. I remember a restaurant with the same name that was in Chicago many years ago. Anyone visited the Lucky Platter lately? Any suggestions for any kind of good food is appreciated!

  1. Campagnola is around the corner from Oceanique and Lucky Platter (which has been there forever). Pretty much the best Italian in Evanston.

Agreed. Campognola is also one of the few Italian places in Chicago where I prefer the grilled meats to the pastas.

    2. Corn dogs, great hot dogs, burgers and unusual dipping and other sauces:

      1. Campagnola continues to be excellent, easily the best Italian restaurant in town now that Va Pensiero has closed. In addition to the Italian food and the grilled meats, their mussels are wonderful!

Oceanique is always a great choice, for the freshest seafood, as well as some of the very best soups, sauces, and desserts you'll find anywhere. Other excellent contemporary American restaurants include Chef's Station (consistently wonderful, like Oceanique) and the Stained Glass; I'm less enamored of Quince. Pete Miller's is great for burgers and steaks as well as seafood.

There's a new French bistro in town called Bistro Bordeaux and it's excellent too. If you happen to be around on a Wednesday, they offer almost any three courses on the menu for $28.95.

Lucky Platter has been around for many years and still offers the same eclectic mix of foods on the menu and kitsch on the walls. :)

        1. Best of Evanston

          We love:

Merle's BBQ - for Southern sides, ribs, and hot wings. Sports bar atmosphere.

Union Pizzera - is often crowded and noisy on a weekend night, great local/organic pizza, pasta and small plates.

Nevins - Good Irish pub with a pretty average menu, but the best chicken soup we have ever had.

Campagnola - Run by the same chef who owns Union, local/organic Italian food perfect for a date or romantic dinner out.

Mt. Everest - expensive, but delicious Indian. Try the Hariyali Tikka.

          Merle's Barbecue

          Union Pizzeria
1245 Chicago Ave, Evanston, IL 60202

          Tommy Nevins Irish Pub
1450 Sherman Ave, Evanston, IL 60201

          1. For pizza, go to Lou Malnati's for delicious deep-dish, the single-crust "pizza in the pan". And go to Giordano's for double-crust "stuffed pizza". I do not care for the pizza at Union, which is just not very good. Even if I were going to hear music at the SPACE concert venue behind the restaurant, I would eat elsewhere beforehand.

I ate at Bistro Bordeaux twice around the time of my above post last spring, and loved it both times. They changed chefs since then. I ate there again last month and was not so impressed. It's okay, as are Jacky's and Jilly's. If I were in the mood for French bistro fare, I would instead go to Bluette in Wilmette, which was excellent when I ate there on Valentine's Day.
