tasty sandwiches @ nona mia (asheville)

mark Apr 18, 2010 10:24 AM

i picked up a couple of really good sandwiches from nona mia for a picnic with my wife last week. i had the "italian" (house-roasted pork, prosciutto & salami w/ provolone, cherry peppers, lettuce, onion, tomato & vinaigrette) while my wife had the "balsamic chicken" (grilled balsamic chicken & prosciutto with artichokes, tomato, arugula, gorgonzola & rosemary-walnut aioli). both came on foccacia. very good, filling sandwiches. accompanied by a side of pasta salad. only possible complaint (and it's very minor) is that they're fairly sloppy sandwiches, so you might want a bib (especially for the chicken one) if you're in your office clothes (as my wife was - she tucked in a napkin and happily dug in). something like a ciabatta might serve the chicken better as it would envelope it more fully. regardless, taste-wise both were excellent.

to my wife's chagrin i swiped the uneaten half to take to work for dinner that night. very tasty!

fyi, the rest of the sandwich menu is as follows:

chicken parmagiana - romano-crusted chicken breast, mozzarella & provolone w/ tomato sauce

roasted veg & smoked mozzarella - farmer's market selection of roasted vegetables (eggplant, zucchini, red pepper, tomato, mushroom & onion) w/ cherry-pepper aioli

nona's meatball - meatballs, provolone, parmesan, tomato sauce & fresh basil

nona's mblt - fresh mozzarella, bacon, baby field greens & tomato w/ basil & balsami viaigrette

Oh man, if that's anything like Eric's MBLT from 28806, then I need to get there soon.

Yeah, the sandwiches (and most everything else I've tried here) are great! Very friendly people - If you haven't been here yet make it a priority!
