Best Japanese Food in Shanghai

theperfectcookie Apr 18, 2010 08:34 AM

Hi all, my tastebuds are dying for some good old fashioned japanese dining and fresh sashimi, and I really can't care to wait till I make a trip to Tokyo for some good japanese food.

Could anyone give some recommendations on Japanese restaurants in Shanghai they really liked? I heard Shintori is really popular, but I haven't ever been there. Is it any good?

Shintori is good but not very authentic, it's more like fusion style Japanese food. Try their foie gras with turnip and the stone pot rice. Both fantastic. (http://www.sugarednspiced.com/shintori/

For fresh tuna, try Tenya. Reasonably priced and very good quality, straight from Japan.

If you want a more intimate experience, try the 14-seat Sushi Oyama. Sit at the sushi bar and watch the chef prepare the food right in front of your eyes. (http://www.sugarednspiced.com/sushi-oyama/

For Japanese yoshoku (western style), definitely go to Dan Cafe. They serve the best Japanese comfort food and excellent coffee in a cozy little cafe. (http://www.sugarednspiced.com/cafe-dan/)

I heard Oyama is really good - though I've never been there personally. I've only visited a handful of Continental restaurants in Shanghai.
