The Dressing Room

  • 9

We are headed to the Dressing Room for dinner this evening and wondering what the buzz is these days? Any suggested dishes? What should we be expecting?

  1. Not much buzz about it at all here. I posted a couple times about it in the past, didn't get much reaction either way. We have never been big fans, gave it a few tries. When I heard they switched to a small plates menu we thought of going back, but never made it. I also heard recently that they have a new chef, so I would like to give it another shot.
Please report back after your meal, would love to hear about it.

Here are a couple of older threads...if you search the tristate archive you'll find more references to it...

The small plates now are in fact better than the old format they had. However it isn't outstanding and is quite expensive. It's just solid.

I completely respect Michel Nischan's work for local/sustainable products. When I was there last...the pork, scallops and chicken dishes were very good. The oysters are very fresh as well!

The menu is different than when I last went but they have pork, scallops and chicken dishes that all look worthy of ordering. The scallops with pork belly especially!

Things to skip: mac and cheese, squid and many of the sides are way overpriced. Can't remember dessert except skip the cookie plate and order another dessert.

Thanks for the replies...so my judgement is that it's hit or miss. If the dish was good, it was really good, but sadly many dishes were quite lackluster. The preserved tomato soup and grilled cheese was excellent but the special (beef and vegetable soup) appetizer was so bland that we didn't eat it and they ended up removing it from our bill. Oysters were quite fresh. Mac and Cheese left a lot to be desired (and in my opinion is pretty tough to mess up mac and cheese) but the brussel sprouts were surprisingly very delicious. The meatloaf which was highly recommended as Newman's Own recipe was really tasty, but the vegetables that came on the plate were so bland and tasteless we didn't bother. Also the scallops were highly recommended but they were pretty gross - mushy and on a bed of wilted frisee and strangest of all it came with two and a half scallops. The third scallop was actually a half scallop as if it was cut it right down the center. The meal ended on a very high note - the Toffee Bread Pudding. It was fantastic!

Overall, I'm not planning a return. There are some great restaurants in the surrounding area that I would choose many times over before coming back. Thanks again for your responses...happy dining.

Thanks for reporting back...your experience pretty much sums up my feelings about the meals we had...a couple of good things here and there, but pretty bland overall...and the service was always terrible for us.
As you say, there are so many other great places around here these days, I don't think we'll waste a night out on the Dressing Room!

What else is there in that area? Wife is quickly falling in love with Westport, and I like the look of that Tavern on Main Street, menu was intriguing.

there's a great restaurant across the street and down a ways.

I also think Blue Lemon and Acqua are decent. (Blue Lemon is a bit hidden)
I haven't tried Manolo's but hear that it's got good food. Thali just opened and has gotten good reviews for Indian food (Thali is on post road right before you turn right at Dressing Room)

Tavern on Main is good. there's a great cheese shop near it as well. Don't waste your money at Oscar's or Westport Pizza... Some ppl like Matsu Sushi in downtown but I find it just average.

Westport is a bit slim on great food but the town is a great one and the food is getting better

Blue Lemon is okay...had lunch a few times, wasn't overly impressed. We do go to Acqua often for lunch, but at dinner it is painfully loud so we stay away. Went to Tavern on Main once or twice, did not like it at all.
Cafe Manolo is very good spanish. We've been there often for dinner, always very good food. We had lunch at Thali the other day for the first time, I posted about it here, it was very tasty, nice small plates.
Matsu Sushi is average, sadly there aren't many other options for decent sushi close by, so we do take out from there maybe once a month.

well if the lack of posts in 3 1/2 years is any indication of lack of interest by serious diners such as CHers it's nop surprise.

We were last there in 2010 and found no reason to return
