Sushi south of Boston

We are craving some sushi and will be driving Rt. 3from Boston to Hyannis. Anything in between please?

For those of us that don’t think Quincy is part of the south shore…Here’s my short list. Unfortunately I don’t find any of them to be destination quality and most are multi purpose Japanese restaurants rather than specializing in sushi/sashimi. I included Inaho which is just beyond Hyannis because I would keep driving past the South Shore places and go there.

    Aoyama - Marshfield

Tokyo Sushi & Hibachi – Plymouth

    Sushi Joy - Plymouth

    Fujiyama - Norwell

    Tsang’s Village – Hanover

    Inaho – Yarmouth Port

That's odd, don't know why you wouldn't think Quincy was part of the South Shore? It borders the atlantic and runs south from Boston. Check the South Shore Chamber of Commerce site.

It's a bit tongue in cheek Peg but I don't think it's odd at all. There has always been a disconnect with Quincy. Wikipedia has four definitions of the S.S., Quincy is included in just one. I have to say that most people living south of the Q that I know don't consider it part of the south shore :)

Wiki: The Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management limits its definition of the South Shore to the municipalities between Boston Harbor and Cape Cod which include Atlantic coastal and coastal watershed areas "from the three-mile limit of the state territorial sea to 100 feet beyond the first major land transportation route encountered (a road, highway, rail line, etc.)."[3] This definition eliminates Quincy and Weymouth, which border Boston Harbor, but adds the towns of Hanover, Norwell and Pembroke.[4]

It's funny, I guess it's all in how we perceive it. Lived in Quincy all my life and would always refer to Quincy as being on the south shore. The chamber of commerce lists it as well. In any event, we should be talking about food and I'm sure this will be deleted shortly :)

it's a somewhat relevant commentary as vistors are often referred to South Shore for food. Now they have a definition, albeit one that i disagree with. Quincy is the South Shore.

Sushi Joy in Plymouth is decent as is the Sushi bar at Tsangs (though i would classify Tsangs as more of an American Chinese restaurant with sushi- in the same regard as Great Chow in Abington) but i think Fujiyama is sub par on the whole.

I'd go with Fuji 1546 as a big first, and Sushi Joy second. For future reference of those coming south of Boston down the Rte.24/495 way, I'd definitely point you to Hayashi in Easton.

Definately relevent. The OP asked for SS sushi places along the rt.3 corridor and recieved all Quicy replies. Quincy is not on rt.3 (or barely) and my definition of the SS, which you don't agree with, is geographicly further south. I just think when people ask for a SS resto in rt.3 area they're talking south of the Q. BTW most of my relatives are from Quincy/Milton so I'm not trying to bash the city.

Uh, but did he/she really ask that? When I read the post it says south of Boston :) Just kidding with you.

Peg, some of us don't believe that Duxbury is the center of the universe. It's ok.

I expected nothing less from the bitter fishmonger who hates on Duxbury.

Fuji is quite popular, and I know a lot of people like Kagawa as well

both are decent. but for me the best is the original Fuji in Wollaston. So small and cramped and yet has a lot of charm. The larger outpost is tired and dirty but the food is still very good.

The original Fuji is much better than Fuji 1546. We stopped going because the service had slipped and the food was getting a little questionable.

Service is horrible at 1546. So much so that we stopped sitting at tables altogether and instead began sitting at the bar. Service was improved at the bar but still slow and largley unattentive.

We used to sit at the bar and just gave up. The place is too much of a "scene". But we did enjoy the other Fuji last night. O-toro was fabulous.

Huh-I have always sat at the bar--the bar, not the sushi bar--and have always had great service and equally terrific food. I've never gotten table service so can't speak to that, but am sorry to hear it's lacking.

I haven't been to the original Fuji in Wollaston for years, but liked it way back and will have to give it a try soon.

Oh-and for the debate in th posts below as to whether Quincy is SS--I definitely think so. I do think of it as the start of the South Shore--I like to call it "The Gateway to the South Shore"--much like Thursday night is the gateway to the weekend :)

Fuji 1546 in Quincy Center at 1566 Hancock St. It's terrific!

If you are in a super rush, you could try their (primarily) take-out sister "Beni Cafe" in north Quincy, also on Hancock St-just off the expressway over the Neponset river bridge. Also terrific.

Sigh, need me some sushi now!

I tried Beni today for the first time. One of the specials, a "Philly roll" was coated in something and fried (very light, not at all heavy tasting), then topped with spicy mayo. "authenticity" debate notwithstanding, this was probably the tastiest roll I've had in a long time! Add scallion pancakes (again, a beautiful fry job - crispy, not at all soggy like the scallion pancakes I'm used to) and a coffee smoothie, and it was one of the best lunches I've had in a while. The place is clean and bright, and only a short drive from my job in Dot! Win.
