I prefer a unique flavor selection…not just vanilla and chocolate. Defiantly has to be a good red velvet!!

There's a new bakery near the corner of Albany Shaker and Osborne that has wonderful cupcakes. I'm sorry but I'm blanking on the name of it, but it's in the same little strip as Mr Subb and Pearl of the Orient. We had 7 different ones, but I'm not sure if they have red velvet because my daughter bought them for us. I know she had a hard time choosing which to buy, so they must have a large selection.

The bakery's name is Sweet Temptations.

I agree with davmar77 that Bella Napoli is really good, but mostly for Italian pastries, cakes and breads. They don't have a variety of fancy cupcakes that I know of.

Another option is Bettie's Cakes, although their double decker bus cupcake stand seems to currently be "at the beauty shop"

Yet another option is The Cupcake Lab in Saratoga Springs:

Try Bake Me Cake Next Door in Delmar. They had some a great variety and for the most part, were rather tasty.

Cocoa Dotts Bake Shop in Albany (on central ave), and The Cookie Factory in Troy. Bella Napoli doesn't really have any "special flavors" but they make good cake.
