what is the best place for Italian beef sandwiches in the Ann Arbor or metro Detroit area?

cheri Apr 17, 2010 10:29 AM

I'm looking for a place or two that serves something as good as Chicago's famous Italian beef sandwiches dipped in au jus. I know of two places in Chicago that are regarded as the best - but is there anything like this in and around Ann Arbor or metro Detroit (hopefully in the west or northwestern suburbs (like my hometown Farmington Hills)?

    Chicago Dogs:
    42640 Van Dyke
    Sterling Heights, MI 48314

Not sure if they are still there but the owner was a Chicago Transplant that was trying to bring some of Chicago with him...Hot Dogs and Italian Roast Beef that they will dip into the Au Gus.

    On a side note...while not a Italian Beef....check out www.gabrielshoagies.com

Apparently there's a place on Packard ( before you get into downtown) that advertises em. I've never been yet since they keep odd hours ( I think only open on weekends or something). An Italian beef is one of my absolute favorite sandwiches and would love if they were more readily available around here.

What's the name of the place? I love Italian beef, and I can say I've never had anything like it in Michigan, let alone Ann arbor.

Wise Guys is run by a couple of U-M students, and it's open only on weekends. I have tried the dogs, and they're decent. Never had the Italian beef. I'd call before coming out.

Chicago Dogs has been gone from this location quite a while. I heard the owner downsized to a cart inside the Lowe's at 16/Dequindre, but even that was a while ago.

Hippos is definitely worth a stop.

I know I've seen Italian beef on a menu somewhere recently, made a mental note to try it the next time, and it's right on the tip of my brain....gaaaahhh!!

Yeah I could not remember....went there a few times years ago...but that is not my neighborhood.

Do they have gardinara as an option for beef? I didn't see it on the menu.

Thanks for the note to original poster - hours now expanded plus outdoor seating! As to Wise Guys, we bring in Hot Chunky Giardiniera from Chicago's own "That Pickle Guy". Took us several trips to Chicago to figure out all the secret beef spices and locate a Gonnella roll vendor, but I think we're pretty close... Pic attached from last year's Italian Beef eating contest, too.

There should be a law against selling one of those darn sandwiches to anyone with the metabolism of a twenty-five year old or older. That's downright scary. Maybe a little more giardiniera, and a little less of the other stuff?

I tried Wise Guys a couple of weeks ago. It definitely fills the void for an Italian beef til I get back to Chicago.

Still open! Weds-Thurs for dinner, Fri-Sat all day. If you're driving far, might want to call ahead on game days... sometimes we sell out faster than anticipated.
